Rhabdomyolysis in a patient taking nebivolol
We report a patient who developed rhabdomyolysis after changing medication to nebivolol. A 75-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of generalized weakness originating 2 weeks before visiting. Approximately 1 month before her admission, her medication was changed from carvedilol 12.5 mg to nebivolol 5 mg. Over this time span, she had no other lifestyle changes causing rhabdomyolysis. Her blood chemistry and whole body bone scan indicated rhabdomyolysis. We considered newly prescribed nebivolol as a causal agent. She was prescribed carvedilol 12.5 mg, which she was previously taking, instead of nebivolol. S...

PKD2 mutation in an Iranian autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease family with misleading linkage analysis data
Conclusion Although analysis of additive informative polymorphic markers can overcome the misleading haplotype data, it is limited because of the lack of other highly polymorphic microsatellite markers closer to the gene. Direct mutation screening can identify the causative mutation in the apparently unlinked pedigree; moreover, it is the only approach to achieve the confirmed diagnosis in individuals with equivocal imaging results. A case of crystalline podocytopathy and tubulopathy without overt glomerular proteinuria in a patient with multiple myeloma
Publication date: Available online 18 June 2016 Source:Kidney Research and Clinical Practice Author(s): Eun Jeong Lee, Su Yeon Lee, So Young Park, YouJin Kim, Jae Shin Choi, Mi Jeoung Kim, Ji Hyeon Park, Jung Eun Lee, Ghee Young Kwon, Yoon-Goo Kim Crystalline nephropathy is a rare yet well-known condition associated with multiple myeloma and other light chain-secreting disorders. Paraproteins that are resistant to proteolysis crystallize within proximal tubular cells and cause light chain proximal tubulopathy, which presents clinically as Fanconi syndrome. Podocytes are rarely affected and the crystalline inclu...

High-level viruria as a screening tool for BK virus nephropathy in renal transplant recipients
Conclusion The presence of high-grade viruria is an early marker for developing BK viremia/BKVN. Detection of high-grade viruria should prompt early allograft biopsy and/or preemptive reduction in immunosuppression. (Source: Kidney Research and Clinical Practice)

Low prealbumin levels are independently associated with higher mortality in patients on peritoneal dialysis
Conclusion Prealbumin levels were an independent and sensitive predictor for mortality in incident PD patients, showing a good correlation with nutritional and inflammatory markers. (Source: Kidney Research and Clinical Practice)

Predictive factors of acute kidney injury in patients undergoing rectal surgery
Conclusion Despite advances in surgical techniques, the incidence of postoperative AKI remains unchanged and is associated with poor outcome. Underlying CKD, diabetes, intraoperative shock, and postoperative ileus are strongly associated with development of AKI. High-risk patients should be carefully monitored for development of postoperative AKI, regardless of surgical approach. (Source: Kidney Research and Clinical Practice)

Plasma renin activity and risk of Cardiovascular and mortality outcomes among Elevated and Non-Elevated blood pressure
Conclusion Higher PRA levels demonstrated increased risk for ischemic heart events and congestive heart failure and a trend toward higher mortality among individuals with SBP > 140 mmHg but not among those with SBP < 140mmHg. (Source: Kidney Research and Clinical Practice)

Prevalence of Hypothyroidism in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease: A Cross-Sectional Study from North India
Conclusion There is growing evidence of increased prevalence of hypothyroidism in dialysis independent chronic kidney disease subjects. A number of findings are seen in this group like lower s. albumin, s. calcium, haemoglobin and higher iPTH. Specific treatment can help improve these. Hence, there is a need to formulate guidelines to screen this population for hypothyroidism. (Source: Kidney Research and Clinical Practice)

Experimental systems to study the origin of the myofibroblast in peritoneal fibrosis
Publication date: Available online 27 July 2016 Source:Kidney Research and Clinical Practice Author(s): Manreet Padwal, Peter J. Margetts Peritoneal fibrosis is one of the major complications occurring in long term peritoneal dialysis patients as a result of injury. Peritoneal fibrosis is characterized by submesothelial thickening and fibrosis which is associated with a decline in peritoneal membrane function. The myofibroblast has been identified as the key player involved in the development and progression of peritoneal fibrosis. Activation of the myofibroblast is correlated with expansion of the extracellular matrix...

Comparison of clinical characteristics of patients with acute kidney injury after intravenous versus inhaled colistin therapy
Conclusion The incidence of AKI in patient with colistin therapy is 60% in our center. It seems that inhaled colistin therapy could not be better in safety than intravenous colistin therapy. (Source: Kidney Research and Clinical Practice)
