Lessons from 30 years’ data of Korean end-stage renal disease registry, 1985–2015
Publication date: Available online 20 August 2015 Source:Kidney Research and Clinical Practice Author(s): Dong-Chan Jin, Sung Ro Yun, Seoung Woo Lee, Sang Woong Han, Won Kim, Jongha Park, Yong Kyun Kim The Korean Society of Nephrology (KSN) launched a nationwide official survey program about dialysis therapy in 1985. Nowadays, the accumulated data for 30 years by this “Insan Prof. Min Memorial end-stage renal disease (ESRD) Patient Registry” program have been providing the essential information for dialysis clinical practice, academic nephrology research, and health management policy. We reviewed 30 y...

Renal artery stenosis presenting with nephrotic-range proteinuria: A case report
We report a rare case of renal artery stenosis (RAS) occurring in a 78-year-old man who presented with nephrotic-range proteinuria. Renal biopsy was performed and results showed mesangiopathic glomerulonephritis which was not compatible with the cause of nephrotic-range proteinuria. Proteinuria was decreased by angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB), but azotemia was aggravated. Therefore, ARB was discontinued inevitably and through work-up for the possibility RAS was performed. Computed tomography (CT) angiography revealed significant RAS on left side and a renal artery stent was inserted. After stenting, aortic dissection de...

Early predictors of acute kidney injury in patients with cirrhosis and bacterial infection: Urinary NGAL and cardiac output as reliable tools
Conclusions Both uNGAL and cardiac output determinations allow the prediction of AKI in infected cirrhotic patients earlier than increments in SCr. (Source: Kidney Research and Clinical Practice)

Organ-on-a-chip and the kidney
Publication date: Available online 20 August 2015 Source:Kidney Research and Clinical Practice Author(s): Sejoong Kim, Shuichi Takayama Traditional approach to the pathophysiology is advancing, but still has many limitations that arise from the real biologic systems and its associated physiological phenomena being too complicated. Microfluidics is a novel technology developed in the engineering field, which provides new options that may overcome these hurdles. Microfluidics handles small volumes of fluids and may apply to various applications, such as DNA analysis chips, other lab-on-a-chip analysis, micro-propulsi...

Current Progress in ABO incompatible kidney transplantation
Publication date: Available online 20 August 2015 Source:Kidney Research and Clinical Practice Author(s): Tai Yeon Koo, Jaeseok Yang ABO incompatible kidney transplantation (ABOi KT) was introduced to expand the donor pool and minimize shortages of kidneys for transplantation. Because improved outcomes of ABOi KT were reported in Japan in the early 2000’s, the number of ABOi KTs has been increasing world-wide. In addition, a better understanding of immune pathogenesis and subsequent aggressive immunosuppression has helped to make effective desensitization protocols. Current strategies of ABOi KT consist of pre-tr...

Psychosocial stress and changes in estimated glomerular filtration rate among adults with diabetes mellitus
Conclusion Among fairly healthy DM patients, we did not find any evidence of a direct association between psychosocial stress and eGFR changes after controlling for important covariates. Predictors of eGFR change in our population included age, race, insulin use, and mean arterial pressure. (Source: Kidney Research and Clinical Practice)

Risk factors for in-Hospital mortality in patients starting hemodialysis
Conclusions Incident hemodialysis patients had high in-hospital mortality. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, infections such as pneumonia, and the use of inotropes and ventilators were strong risk factors for in-hospital mortality. However, elective hemodialysis for chronic kidney disease was associated with survival. (Source: Kidney Research and Clinical Practice)

Warfarin skin necrosis mimicking calciphylaxis in a patient with secondary hyperparathyroidism undergoing peritoneal dialysis
We report on a patient who presented with painful skin ulcers on the lower extremities after administration of warfarin following a valve operation. Calciphylaxis was considered first because of the host factors; eventually, the skin lesions were diagnosed as warfarin skin necrosis by biopsy. The skin lesions improved after warfarin discontinuation and short-term steroid therapy. Most patients with end-stage renal disease have some form of cardiovascular disease, and some require temporary or continual warfarin treatment. It is important to differentiate between warfarin skin necrosis and calciphylaxis in patients with pai...
