Establishing a clinical service for the treatment of osteoid osteoma using magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound: overview and guidelines
Abstract Recent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) in the treatment of osteoid osteoma (OO), a painful, benign bone tumor. As MRgFUS is a noninvasive and radiation-free treatment, it stands to replace the current standard of care, percutaneous radiofrequency, or laser thermal ablation. Within an institution, creation of a clinical OO MRgFUS treatment program would not only provide cutting edge medical treatment at the current time but would also establish the foundation for an MRgFUS clinical service to introduce treatments currently unde...

Acoustic neuromodulation from a basic science prospective
We present here biophysical models to gain deeper insights into how an acoustic stimulus might influence or modulate neuronal activity. There is clear evidence that neural activity is not only associated with electrical and chemical changes but that an electro-mechanical coupling is also involved. Currently, there is no theory that unifies the electrical, chemical, and mechanical aspects of neuronal activity. Here, we discuss biophysical models and hypotheses that can explain some of the mechanical aspects associated with neuronal activity: the soliton model, the neuronal intramembrane cavitation excitation model, and the ...

Detection of tissue coagulation by decorrelation of ultrasonic echo signals in cavitation-enhanced high-intensity focused ultrasound treatment
Conclusions The results show that the regions of coagulation and cavitation could be ultrasonically detected as those with low cross-correlation coefficients between RF frames with certain intervals. This method will contribute to improve the safety and accuracy of the HIFU treatment enhanced by cavitation microbubbles. (Source: Journal of Therapeutic Ultrasound)

Evaluation of MRI protocols for the assessment of lumbar facet joints after MR-guided focused ultrasound treatment
Conclusions MRgFUS provided sufficient precision and image quality for visualization and characterization of ablated facet joints directly after ablation. MRI may help in monitoring the efficacy of FUS ablation without contrast after treating patients with back pain. (Source: Journal of Therapeutic Ultrasound)

Assessing heating distribution by therapeutic ultrasound on bone phantoms and in vitro human samples using infrared thermography
Conclusions Commercially available bone phantoms could be used in research focusing on thermal effects of ultrasound. Small differences in mean and standard deviation temperatures were observed between bone samples and phantoms. Temperature can reach more than 10 °C inside the medullar canal on a fixed probe position which may lead to severe cellular damage. (Source: Journal of Therapeutic Ultrasound)

Magnetic resonance-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound combined with radiotherapy for palliation of head and neck cancer—a pilot study
Discussion This pilot study aims to assess safety, toxicity and feasibility of MRg-HIFU treatments to the head and neck region and to evaluate changes caused by MRg-HIFU within the treated tumour regions based on post-treatment MRI. (Source: Journal of Therapeutic Ultrasound)

Simulation of high-intensity focused ultrasound lesions in presence of boiling
Conclusions In this article, the whole procedure of model design, calibration, and validation is discussed. In addition to depicting the creative use of data, our modeling approach focuses on the understanding of the mechanisms influencing the shape of the lesion. Further work is required to study the influence of the remaining bubble clouds in the context of pulse groups. (Source: Journal of Therapeutic Ultrasound)

In-vitro cell treatment with focused shockwaves —influence of the experimental setup on the sound field and biological reaction
Conclusions < /h3 > < p class= " a-plus-plus " > Until now, correct and sufficient information about the shockwave influencing cells in vitro is only provided in 1 of 32 publications. Based on these findings, guidelines for improved in vitro setups are proposed which help minimize the influence of the setup on the sound field. < /p > < /span > (Source: Journal of Therapeutic Ultrasound)

DCE-MRI and IVIM-MRI of rabbit Vx2 tumors treated with MR-HIFU-induced mild hyperthermia
Conclusions Changes in DCE and IVIM parameters were detected after hyperthermia and were variable between the rabbits. DCE- and IVIM-MRI may be promising tools to assess tumor responses to hyperthermia. Further research in a larger number of subjects is necessary in order to assess their value for treatment response monitoring. (Source: Journal of Therapeutic Ultrasound)

Focal therapy using magnetic resonance image-guided focused ultrasound in patients with localized prostate cancer
Conclusions MRGFUS is a feasible alternative for focal therapy in a select subset of patients with prostate cancer. The treatment is well tolerated with no evidence of decline in functional outcomes. Initial post-therapy biopsy results are promising. Long-term treatment efficacy requires further study. (Source: Journal of Therapeutic Ultrasound)

Equipment, measurement and dose—a survey for therapeutic ultrasound
Conclusions The results clearly demonstrate the need not only for further improvements in measuring devices and for measurement guidelines but also for a wider dissemination and higher awareness of existing standards. Whilst it is unlikely that a single definition of dose can be sufficient for all ultrasound treatment modalities, the answers clearly indicate that many aspects would benefit from clear definitions of relevant dose quantities and shed light on the preferred form of such definitions.
