Treatment envelope evaluation in transcranial magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound utilizing 3D MR thermometry
Conclusions It is shown that 3D MR thermometry can be used to improve the safety assessment in treatment envelope evaluations. Using a non-optimal transducer, it is shown that some regions where therapeutic levels of FUS can be delivered, as suggested by the first type of envelope, are not necessarily safely treated due to the amount of unintended near-field heating occurring. The results presented in this study highlight the need for 3D MR thermometry in tcMRgFUS. (Source: Journal of Therapeutic Ultrasound)

Feasibility of volumetric MRI-guided high intensity focused ultrasound (MR-HIFU) for painful bone metastases
Conclusions This is the first study reporting on the volumetric MR-HIFU ablation for painful bone metastases. No major treatment-related adverse events were observed during follow-up. The results of our study showed that volumetric MR-HIFU ablation for painful bone metastases is technically feasible and can induce pain relief in patients with metastatic bone pain refractory to the standard of care. Future research should be aimed at standardization of the treatment procedures and treatment of larger numbers of patients to assess treatment effectiveness and comparison to the standard of care. Timing of high-intensity pulses for myocardial cavitation-enabled therapy
Conclusion The end of systole (R + RR/3) was identified as an optimal trigger time point which produced identifiable ECG complexes and substantial cardiomyocyte injury but minimal cardiac functional disruption during treatment. (Source: Journal of Therapeutic Ultrasound)

Early assessment of high-intensity focused ultrasound treatment of benign thyroid nodules by scintigraphic means
Conclusions HIFU appears to be safe and is an easy to perform means of thermal ablation. This study shows that HIFU treatment in thyroidal nodules can be evaluated by scintigraphic means shortly after the intervention. Due to small sample size, the exact magnitude of HIFU ablation efficiency in thyroidal nodules remains a value to be assessed in a larger study. (Source: Journal of Therapeutic Ultrasound)

Prediction and suppression of HIFU-induced vessel rupture using passive cavitation detection in an ex vivo model
Conclusions These results suggest that acoustic cavitation plays an important role in HIFU-induced vessel rupture. In HIFU treatments for vessel occlusion, passive monitoring of acoustic emissions may be useful in avoiding hemorrhage due to vessel rupture, as shown in the rupture suppression experiments. Short-term sensory and cutaneous vascular responses to therapeutic ultrasound in the forearms of healthy volunteers
Conclusion This study demonstrated minor reductions in skin blood flow, skin temperatures, and C fiber perception thresholds immediately after 3 MHz, and 1 MHz US. The responses observed may have been due to a thermo-cooling effect of the gel or due to the direct effect of US on C fibers of median and ulnar nerves. US had a negligible effect on A-beta fibres. This would suggest that future studies looking at physiological effects of US should move towards investigating larger dosages and study the effects in patient populations.
