Effect of applied energy in renal sympathetic denervation with magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound in a porcine model
ConclusionsWhile MR guided focused ultrasound renal denervation was found to be safe and effective in this normotensive animal model, the results indicated the need to incorporate patient-specific details in the treatment planning of MRgFUS renal denervation procedure. Acoustic and thermal characterization of agar based phantoms used for evaluating focused ultrasound exposures
ConclusionsThe proposed phantom closely matched the acoustic and thermal properties of tissues. Experiments using MR thermometry demonstrated the usefulness of this phantom to evaluate ultrasonic exposures. (Source: Journal of Therapeutic Ultrasound)

Spatially-segmented undersampled MRI temperature reconstruction for transcranial MR-guided focused ultrasound
ConclusionsSeparate reconstruction of brain and water bath signals enables accelerated MR temperature imaging during MRgFUS procedures with low errors due to undersampling using Cartesian and non-Cartesian trajectories. The spatially-segmented method benefits from multiple coils, and reconstructs temperature with lower error compared to measurements from SENSE-reconstructed images. The acceleration can be applied to increase volumetric coverage and spatiotemporal resolution. (Source: Journal of Therapeutic Ultrasound)

High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation of benign thyroid nodules – a systematic review
ConclusionsDespite the few number of studies, our review appeared to suggest that HIFU is a safe and efficacious method of treating symptomatic benign thyroid nodules. However, larger-scale, prospective trials with longer follow-up period are indeed required to confirm this. In terms of the ablation itself, relative to other ablation techniques, there are still much room for improvements in shortening treatment duration and expanding the range of treatable nodules. A meta-analysis of palliative treatment of pancreatic cancer with high intensity focused ultrasound
ConclusionsHIFU appears to be an effective tool for pain palliation in advanced pancreatic cancer. Studies assessing treatment in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma are limited by factors such as small sample sizes and heterogeneity in clinical definitions and assessments. Prospective randomized and standardized studies are necessary to confirm the effectiveness of HIFU in relieving pain, and to evaluate for any potential impact on tumor control and patient survival. Long-term efficacy of ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound treatment of breast fibroadenoma
ConclusionsUS-guided HIFU represents a promising non-invasive method with sustainable FA volume reduction and patient ’s tolerability. Although one treatment is highly efficient, the volume reduction can be increased with second treatment.Trial registrationNCT01331954. Registered 07 April 2011. Objective image analysis of real-time three-dimensional intraoperative ultrasound for intrinsic brain tumour surgery
ConclusionsMPB and SD are objective measures reflecting the sensitivity of i3DUS in detecting the presence and extent of intrinsic brain tumours. They indirectly suggest heterogeneity, cellularity and invasiveness, providing information of the nature of the tumour, and also reflect the sensitivity of intraoperative US to detect the presence of residual intrinsic brain tumours. Development of this paradigm will enhance i3DUS use as an adjunct in brain tumour surgery. Optimizing its intraoperative application will impact surgical resection and, hence, patient outcome. Moderate-to-deep sedation technique, using propofol and ketamine, allowing synchronised breathing for magnetic resonance high-intensity focused ultrasound (MR-HIFU) treatment for uterine fibroids: a pilot study
ConclusionsThe use of a specific combination of IV propofol and esketamine for procedural sedation and analgesia reduced the discomfort and pain during MR-guided HIFU treatments of uterine fibroids. The resulting regular breathing pattern allowed for easy synchronisation of the MR-HIFU procedure. Based on our results, esketamine and propofol sedation performed by trained non-medical sedation practitioners is feasible and safe, has a low risk of major adverse events, and has a short recovery time, avoiding a session of general anaesthesia.
