An Institutional Summary of Incidence and Risk of Second Primary Cancer (SPC) after Treatment for Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma (PTC)
Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is the most common endocrine malignancy, accounting for 2.9% of new cancer cases. Decreased mortality and longer survival raise concern for development of SPC. Studies cite up to a 10% rate of SPC after DTC, with increased incidence of SPC among patients with PTC. Radioactive iodine therapy (RAIT) is implicated as a potential reason for SPC. We aimed to determine the incidence of SPC, associated mortality, and relationship with RAIT. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Hispanic Race Is an Independent Predictor for Increased Rates of Nodal Disease in Papillary Thyroid Cancer (PTC)
Cancer biology may vary according to race. Based on experience, we hypothesized that Hispanic patients have greater incidence of nodal metastases than other races. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Low Levels of Serum Angiopoietin-1 Are Associated with Benign and Malignant Thyroid Disease
Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy and angiogenesis has been shown to play a key role in its development. Activity of the angiopoietin (Ang) family of growth factors has been implicated in tumor-related angiogenesis for several forms of malignancy, including differentiated thyroid cancer. Retrograde Dissection of the Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve: A Simple and Safe Thyroidectomy Technique
The traditional surgical technique for thyroid surgery has limitations in terms of exposure of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. The aim of the study was to describe the experience with an alternative retrograde dissection technique and the factors related to the appearance of postoperative dysphonia with this technique. Timing of Thyroidectomy Does Not Affect Overall Survival in Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma
Appropriate timing of definitive thyroidectomy after diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is not well-defined. We analyzed the impact of timing of thyroidectomy on overall survival (OS) in PTC. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Analysis of Generational Gap in Preferred Feedback Patterns
Feedback is an essential component of complex work environments. Different generations have been shown to have different set of values, derived from societal and cultural changes. We hypothesize that preferred feedback patterns may be affected by generational gaps in a tertiary care academic institution. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

A Critical Analysis of Insurance Coverage of Ventral Hernia Repair in the US
A ventral hernia can be a life-threatening emergency and timely surgical repair is vital to ensure better clinical outcomes and reduced healthcare costs. These can be improved with the use of effective surgical adjuncts, such as a biological meshes, diastasis repair, component release and panniculectomy/abdominoplasty. However, these adjuncts are often considered elective procedures which poses challenges when seeking insurance coverage. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

A Preliminary Report on an Observational Study About the Role of Intra-abdominal Pressure in Big Incisional Hernia
To determine a possible role of intrabdominal pressure(IAP) on incisional hernia pathophysiology and development. The 2nd endpoint to find an IAP cut-off to define an “high risk” of incisional hernia/recurrence development. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Assessing Surgical Patient Perspectives and Experiences on Telehealth
The expansion of telehealth during the pandemic has been a paradigm shift in care delivery, yet the impact on surgical patients is still being evaluated. We hypothesized that surgical patients would report high levels of satisfaction with telehealth, and analyses would reveal important predictors of this satisfaction.
