A Proposed Multimodal Pain Control Regimen for Patients Undergoing Mastectomy with Reconstruction and Its Effect on Minimizing Narcotic Use and Hospital Length of Stay
This study highlights the findings of a novel multimodal ERAS protocol employed by two surgeons at a single institution performing mastectomy with immediate implant-based reconstruction and the data extrapolated demonstrates how it may influence narcotic use and length of stay in the hospital. Breast Volume Measurement As a Predictor of Cosmetic Outcome and Patient Satisfaction Following Oncoplastic Breast Surgery for Breast Cancer
Breast volume measurement is necessary to evaluate the cosmetic results more objectively following breast surgery. Objective of study was to assess patient satisfaction with cosmetic outcomes after oncoplastic breast surgery(OBS), and to establish the correlation between patient satisfaction and percentage of breast volume excision (PBVE). Cancer Institute: A Place of Anxiety
Breast imaging can be associated with substantial anxiety due to the impact of abnormal mammography on distress and perceptions of risk for breast cancer. We sought to determine the level of anxiety after notification of abnormal mammography and need for follow up at a cancer institute and whether or not further distress was provoked by the visit to the ‘cancer institute’ for follow up. Examining Local Risk Factors for Late Stage Diagnosis of Breast Cancers: A Single Institution Experience
Prior research suggests sociodemographic factors are associated with a delayed presentation for patients with locally advanced breast cancer (LABC). We sought to identify sociodemographic factors in our regional catchment area which delay a diagnosis of LABC. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Impact of Certified Letters on Facilitating Breast Center Follow-Up Among High-risk Patients
Adherence to breast screening recommendations is important for high-risk patients and those with a personal history of breast cancer. A variety of interventions, including structured phone interviews, automated text or phone messages, and mailed reminders have been described. Such practices are common to many breast centers, however, the utility of certified letters as an isolated intervention has not been previously metered or described. In our breast care center, a certified letter with signature upon delivery requirement is sent after a patient has missed their scheduled appointment. Impact of Routine Expert Breast Pathology Consultation and Factors Predicting Discordant Diagnosis
Expert breast pathology consultation is best practice. However, its impact on operative management and predictive factors of discordant diagnosis after expert consultation are not well characterized. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Intraoperative Radiation: A Large Integrated Healthcare System's Approach, Outcomes, and Provider Practice
Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) remains controversial in the management of early breast cancer. We sought to evaluate our approach to offering a controversial radiation modality and outcomes of IORT. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Mastectomy Options for the Treatment of Breast Cancer Recurrence after Lumpectomy
This study aimed at evaluating outcomes of different mastectomy types in regards to second recurrence and surgical complications. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Omitting Foley Catheter Use in Mastectomy Patients with or Without Immediate Reconstruction
Surgeries anticipated to exceed 3 hours generally require Foley catheter placement, however, this time cutoff is somewhat arbitrary. We designed a study with retrospective and prospective components to determine if mastectomy with or without reconstruction can be done without Foley use without an increase in urinary retention risk. Prevention of Postoperative Lymphedema for Breast Cancer Surgery with Axillary Lymph Node Dissection Combined with Lympha and Lymphatic Preservation: Patient Selection and Outcomes
Lymphedema remains common following breast cancer axillary node dissection (ALND) for lymph node metastasis, and Radiation Therapy (RT) increases lymphedema risk further to approximately 30%. Axillary reverse mapping (ARM) identifies the lymphatics draining the arm, and Lymphatic Microsurgical Preventative Healing Approach (LYMPHA) includes lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA) at the time of ALND for lymphedema prevention. Single-institution Experience of Outcomes after Excision of Benign Phyllodes Tumors: Low Recurrence Risk Despite Positive Margins
Guidelines recommend> 1 cm margins for excision of borderline or malignant phyllodes tumors but variability exists for benign phyllodes tumors (BPT). We hypothesize that positive (+) margins after BPT excision is not associated with high recurrence and re-excision is unnecessary. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

The Role of Race in Predicting Mastectomy Outcomes: Evaluation Against a Standardized Reimbursement Tool
All Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (APR-DRGs) group similar patients for quality improvement, public reporting, and hospital reimbursement. APR-DRGs assign patients severity of illness (SOI) and risk of mortality (ROM) scores based on a series of patient variables. Our aim is to identify the efficacy of APR-DRGs in predicting surgical patient outcomes both independently and in the context of race, a currently excluded variable. Trends of Contralateral Prophylactic Mastectomy at the Time of Ipsilateral Breast Tumor Recurrence
This study aimed at examining CPM trends at time of ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence (IBTR) and determining if CPM is mainly patient-driven, surgeon-specific and or whether tumor biology has a crucial role in decision making process. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Enhanced Recovery after Cardiac Surgery (ERACS): Early Findings from a Pilot, Observational Study
The objective of this study is to compare the impact of an early Enhanced Recovery After Cardiac Surgery (ERACS) program to traditional perioperative cardiac surgery care on hospital length. The application of ERAS to cardiac surgery is a recent development (2017) and there have only been a small number of studies published in this field to date. ERACS research aims to challenge traditional paradigms in cardiac surgery to improve patient outcomes and experiences and to reduce associated health care costs.
