Targetable Action Points to Enhance Surgical Decision-Making
Framed often as an objective process, decision-making for surgery has been shown to be highly variable. Modern theories describe the use of heuristics, or mental shortcuts, that facilitate quick judgments but can be vulnerable to bias. In this context, we sought to explore the processes, heuristics, and determinants in surgical decision-making to identify potential action points for decision support. Two-surgeon Whipple Procedure: A Model for Perioperative Efficiency and Quality
The Whipple procedure is well known for its complexity and operative time. We hypothesized that two attending surgeons working together simultaneously would have improved perioperative efficiency and quality. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Using Predictive Bed Planning to Reduce Case Cancellations and Create Growth Opportunities in High Occupancy Academic Health Systems
Elective surgical patients comprise a large proportion of academic medical center (AMC) inpatient census. With many AMCs frequently operating at high-occupancy, uncontrolled variation in census can lead to capacity challenges. Our objective was to develop and implement a Surgical Smart Scheduling Tool (SSST) in three AMC hospitals. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Association Between Hospital Volume and Surgical Outcomes after Hepato-pancreato-biliary Surgery Among US Veterans: A Veterans Affairs Surgical Quality Improvement Program Analysis
The association between postoperative outcomes and hospital volume is well established. The adequate volume for Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) surgery and its impact on surgical outcomes at VA hospitals is unknown. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Contemporary Predictors of Mortality after Liver Metastasectomy
Liver metastasectomy is increasingly included in the multidisciplinary management of patients with stage 4 malignancies. However, inpatient studies characterizing risk factors of perioperative death have not been completed. We aim to describe predictors of perioperative mortality following liver metastasis resection. Hyperlipasemia in Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients
SARS-CoV-2 is a novel virus with numerous poorly elucidated clinical manifestations. Previous reports have demonstrated a potential link between SARS-CoV-2 positivity and manifestation of various biomarkers such as elevated D-dimers. The goal of the current study was to investigate the incidence of hyperlipasemia in hospitalized COVID-19 positive patients and correlate its relationship to clinical outcomes.
