Effects of Rapid Weight Loss after Bariatric Surgery on Prevention of Pulmonary Hypertension Measured by the Pulmonary Artery Diameter and Its Ratio to the Ascending Aorta Diameter
The pulmonary artery diameter (PAD) and its ratio with the ascending aorta diameter (PAD/AoD ratio) are predictors of pulmonary hypertension (PH). Severe obesity increases the risk of PH due to its association with left ventricular dysfunction and obstructive sleep apnea. The aim of this study was to identify changes in the PAD and PA/AoD ratio after bariatric surgery (BaS) using chest computed tomography (CT). (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Patient-Centered Outcomes Associated with Leak after Sleeve Gastrectomy
Sleeve gastrectomy is the most frequently performed bariatric operation in the United States. It is typically well tolerated by patients and yields good results; however, leak after sleeve gastrectomy can be extremely detrimental to a patient ’s health, and their impact on quality of life is unknown. Sociodemographic Predictors of Internalized Stigma, in Patients Seeking Bariatric Surgery, Using the Weight Self-Stigma Questionnaire (WSSQ)
Internalized-stigma (IS) may negatively impact weight-loss in patients with obesity. However limited information exists on IS in patients seeking surgically- mediated weight-loss. Therefore, we aimed to examine IS in pre-and post-op patients. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

The Amount of Preoperative Weight Loss May Predict Weight Regain 4 Years after Bariatric Surgery
Prior to bariatric surgery most insurance providers require the completion of a supervised weight loss (WL) program. The importance of preoperative WL for postoperative WL remains controversial. The purpose of our study was to determine the impact of preoperative WL on postoperative WL and weight regain (WR) 4 years after bariatric surgery. The Reduction of Retroorbital Fat Volume: A Novel Ophthalmologic Benefit of Bariatric Surgery Induced Weight Loss
The association between obesity and high Intraocular pressure (IOP) as a risk factor for the progression of glaucoma remains unclear. One main factor that contributes to high IOP is the physical pressure exerted by the retroorbital fat. Bariatric Surgery (BaS) produces a decrease of several fat deposits in the body; therefore the aim of our study is to assess the behavior of the retroorbital fat after BaS. Assessment of Bariatric Surgery Effects on Body Mass Index, Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, and Risks for Cardiovascular Diseases in Sudan
In a country like Sudan with limited health resources and high prevalence of tropical diseases, obesity would complicate health challenges even more. However, the field of bariatric surgery in Sudan lacks research due to the fact that until 2018, there were no centers specialized in the surgical management of obesity and its comorbidities in the entire African Horn countries. This research is the first on patients underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) or gastric bypass (LGB) in Sudan. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Diagnostic Yield and Clinical Impacts of Routine Complete Preoperative Evaluation in Bariatric Patients
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP) is the preferred procedure for morbidly obese patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) may worsen GERD postoperatively. We assessed the diagnostic yield and clinical impact of routine comprehensive preoperative evaluation. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Effect of Bariatric Surgery on the Risk of Psychiatric Illness
Bariatric surgery (BS) can induce significant weight loss and numerous physical health advantages. However, the effect of BS on the risk of psychiatric illness has not been well-characterized, despite mental health diagnoses being prevalent among patients with obesity. We compared the risk of all-cause psychiatric diagnosis among BS patients vs obese controls. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Independent Predictors of Discontinuation of Diabetic Medications after Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Bypass: Does Procedure Type Matter?
Gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy have proven beneficial effects on diabetes. Magnetic Lower Esophageal Sphincter Augmentation (LINX) Is Effective and Safe in Patients with Prior Gastric Surgery — Outcomes in Patients with Prior Bariatric Surgery or Partial Gastrectomy
Esophageal sphincter augmentation (ESA) has been shown to significantly improve gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms in patients with moderate-severe GERD. The indication for ESA currently excludes patients with moderate-severe GERD with prior bariatric surgery or partial gastrectomy. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

Potential Implications of Rapid Weight Loss after Bariatric Surgery on Obstructive Sleep Apnea Induced by Architectural and Volume Changes of the Tongue and Upper Airway
There is an association between obesity, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, and Upper Airway Volume (UAWV). Measurement of the Tongue Length (TL) and Height (TH) recently emerged as a non-invasive method of evaluation of the UAWV and tinge architecture. We hypothesized that bariatric surgery-induced rapid weight loss determines an increase of Upper Respiratory Airway volume. (Source: Journal of the American College of Surgeons)
