Exit site care in the Netherlands: the use of guidelines in practice
ConclusionThe exit site guideline has been widely used in the Netherlands, improving quality in care and utilising a more individual patient approach in care. However, there are still differences identified in practice for which the evidence‐base and evaluation will be undertaken to supplement the guideline and attribute to exit site care practice. Nutritional parameters as mortality predictors in haemodialysis: differences between genders
ConclusionDepending on the gender, different parameters such as protein intake, potassium, phosphorus, body mass index and albumin are associated with mortality in patients undergoing HD. Albumin <3.5 g/dl is an independent mortality predictor in both genders, whereas a body mass index <23 kg/m2 is an independent predictor of death, but only in men. (Source: Journal of Renal Care)

Patient perspectives on the optimal start of renal replacement therapy
ConclusionsFuture efforts should incorporate additional strategies for helping patients with advanced CKD achieve emotional and psychological safety while preparing for RRT. (Source: Journal of Renal Care)

Patterns of healthcare encounters experienced by patients with chronic kidney disease
ConclusionsUnderstanding patterns of healthcare encounters provides important information about the transition experiences of patients with CKD. Exploring ways to reduce the risks associated with transitions in care may prevent problems with home medication management, frequent emergency department visits and potentially avoidable hospitalisations. Evolution of post ‐traumatic growth during the first 12 months of dialysis: A longitudinal study
ConclusionFour different patterns of PTG have been identified, contributing to our understanding of the dynamics of the process of growth and enabling us to identify patients who may be more vulnerable. (Source: Journal of Renal Care)

Differences in care burden of patients undergoing dialysis in different centres in the netherlands
ConclusionDifferences in care burden were observed between academic and other centres, with more time required for treatment in academic centres. Contribution of patient characteristics to the time difference was minimal. The only patient characteristics that predicted care time were previous transplantation, which reduced the time required, and gender, with women requiring more care time. Depression, anxiety and health ‐related quality of life amongst patients who are starting dialysis treatment
ConclusionThe initiation of RRT has a strong impact on HRQL in comparison with a reference population and with other stages of CKD. The early detection of an altered psychological state is important, as this condition should be treated from the first stages of the disease, as it can significantly affect the subsequent development of RRT and the patient's quality of life. Evaluation of renal function in a specific population of living kidney donors
ConclusionKidney donation is unquestionably a safe procedure. However, a better understanding of the long‐term consequences of living donor kidney transplantation is still needed. This knowledge may have important implications for the follow‐up of these patients. Our study has demonstrated a non‐negligible presence of an early marker of glomerular injury and a decrease in the GFR of some patients, thereby reinforcing the proposal for long‐term follow‐up of living kidney donors. Obesity and kidney disease: Hidden consequences of the epidemic
SUMMARY Obesity has become a worldwide epidemic, and its prevalence has been projected to grow by 40% in the next decade. This increasing prevalence has implications for the risks of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and also for Chronic Kidney Disease. A high body mass index is one of the strongest risk factors for new‐onset Chronic Kidney Disease. In individuals affected by obesity, a series of complex pathophysiologic changes occur that lead to the development of Chronic Kidney Disease. These include on the one hand effects mediated by the downstream consequences of obesity (such as diabetes mellitus and hypertension),...

Sleep disturbance and depressive affect in patients treated with haemodialysis
ConclusionPoor sleep quality is prevalent in patients on maintenance haemodialysis, and is associated with increased daytime sleepiness. Depression further compounds this relationship, and is significantly associated with increased daytime sleepiness and restless leg syndrome. (Source: Journal of Renal Care)
