Self‐management programmes in stages 1–4 chronic kidney disease: a literature review
ConclusionThe effectiveness of self‐management programmes in CKD (Stages 1–4) cannot be conclusively ascertained, and further research is required. It is desirable that individuals with CKD are supported to effectively self‐manage day‐to‐day aspects of their health. (Source: Journal of Renal Care)

Psychosocial distress in patients with end‐stage kidney disease
SUMMARY This is the first paper in a two‐part Continuing Education (CE) series focusing on psychosocial care of patients with end‐stage kidney disease (ESKD), which addresses a variety of psychological responses experienced by patients when adapting to the challenges posed by living with this long‐term condition. The second paper will examine further the issues of coping and adjustment to ESKD and the need for renal supportive care to ensure person‐centred holistic care is provided to patients. Symptom clusters in patients on dialysis and their association with quality‐of‐life outcomes
ConclusionThe strong associations between symptom clusters and depressive symptoms and the physical and mental domains of HRQOL should lead to an increased focus on symptom‐alleviating interventions. Additional research is warranted to determine whether treatment of symptom clusters rather than single symptoms will improve HRQOL. (Source: Journal of Renal Care)

Pathways to palliative care for patients with chronic kidney disease
ConclusionHealthcare professionals' beliefs, values and knowledge of palliative care influence their end‐of‐life care decisions. The influence of patient, family and clinicians involves negotiation and equivocation. Health professionals support the early discussion of end‐of‐life care in CKD at predialysis education to enable clearer decision making. (Source: Journal of Renal Care)

A longitudinal study of nutritional and inflammatory status in patients on dialysis
ConclusionSerum albumin had the strongest predictive value of all the pertinent parameters in the study. Thus, better conjugate clinical and laboratory measurements should be developed for patients on PD, as well as for those with a relatively low MIS. (Source: Journal of Renal Care)

‘skills for growing up’: supporting autonomy in young people with kidney disease
ConclusionsMaking the tool available online is important. The challenge for professionals is to move beyond the focus on medical management and to consider developmental tasks when coaching their patients into adulthood. Application to PracticeThe Skills for Growing Up—Nephrology (SGU‐N) tool is a promising instrument for use by professionals in paediatric nephrology. Its use can help young people achieving autonomy and may contribute to their successful transition to adulthood and adult care. (Source: Journal of Renal Care)

European training and research in peritoneal dialysis: scientific objectives, training, implementation and impact of the programme
ConclusionIt is hoped that EuTRiPD can and will have a significant impact on socio‐economic and scientific aspects of PD. It is the aim for EuTRiPD to boost the uptake of PD throughout Europe by making PD the obvious choice for patients. (Source: Journal of Renal Care)
