Early life factors and dental caries in 5-year-old children in China
Conclusions This study shows certain early life factors play a role in dental caries among Chinese preschool children and provides important insights to shape public health initiatives on the importance of introducing early toothbrushing. Clinical Significance The early environment, especially the age when parents introduce toothbrushing to their children, can be an important factor to prevent childhood dental caries. A randomised exploratory clinical evaluation of dentifrices used as controls in dentinal hypersensitivity studies
Conclusions The six negative control dentifrices can be used to assess dentifrices considered to be effective in reducing DH. Although response ranges from commercially available negative controls was varied, these results may begin to set acceptable performance ranges for control dentifrices in DH trials. Veneered zirconia inlay-retained fixed dental prostheses: 10-Year results from a prospective clinical study.
Conclusions Use of fully veneered zirconia-based IRFDP with this technique cannot be recommended. Clinical significance A large incidence of complications and poor survival were observed for fully veneered zirconia-based IRFDP, revealing an urgent need for further design improvements for this type of restoration. This, again, emphasizes the need for testing of new restoration designs in clinical trials before implementation in general dental practice. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Antimicrobial and biological activity of leachate from light curable pulp capping materials
Conclusions The development of light curable tricalcium silicate-based pulp capping materials is important to improve the bonding to the final resin restoration. Testing of both antimicrobial activity and biological behavior is critical for material development. The experimental light curable materials exhibited promising biological properties but require further development to enhance the antimicrobial characteristics. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Novel multifunctional dental cement to prevent enamel demineralization near orthodontic brackets
Conclusion The Novel “RMGI+MPC+DMAHDM+NACP” cement substantially reduced enamel demineralization adjacent to orthodontic brackets, yielding much less lesion depth and greater enamel hardness under biofilm acid attacks than commercial controls. The clinical significance is that the novel multi-agent (RMGI+MPC+DMAHDM+NACP) method is promising for a wide range of preventive and restorative applications to combat caries. Ex vivo investigation on the postoperative integrity of the apical constriction after the sole use of electronic working length determination
Conclusions The sole use of EWLD allowed for a high accuracy of measurements and granted precise preparation of the apical regions. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Validation of the Visible Occlusal Plaque Index (VOPI) in Estimating Caries lesion Activity
Conclusion The VOPI has construct as well as convergent and discriminant validity and is therefore recommended as an additional clinical tool to estimate caries lesions activity and support treatment decisions. Clinical significance The Visible Occlusal Plaque Index is an additional clinical tool to the assessment of oral hygiene and caries lesion activity. The VOPI is recommended to standardize and categorize information on the occlusal biofilm, thus being suitable for direct application in research and clinical settings. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Oral Astringent Stimuli Alter the Enamel Pellicle ’s Ultrastructure as Revealed by Electron Microscopy
Conclusions Astringent-induced pellicle modifications were for the first time visualized by TEM. The ultrastructural alterations of the dental pellicle may partly explain the tooth-roughening effect caused by oral astringent stimuli. Clinical Significance Astringents might modify the pellicle’s protective properties against dental erosion, attrition, as well as bacterial adhesion, and by this means may influence tooth health. The findings may thus be particularly relevant for preventive dentistry. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Repair may increase survival of direct posterior restorations – A practice based study
Conclusion Overall, the GDPs showed satisfactory rates of restoration longevity over 10 years. Repair can increase the survival of restorations although, substantial differences exist among practitioners in repair frequency and AFRs. Molars, multi-surface restorations, presence of an endodontic treatment and a removable denture were identified as risk factors for failure. Clinical Significance Repair, instead of total replacement of a defective restoration, is a Minimally Invasive procedure which can increase the survival of the original filling, reducing the risk for pulp complications and treatment costs. Impact of delayed gratification on oral health and caries status in the primary dentition
Conclusions These data provide insights into a novel predictor for identifying individuals at a higher risk of dental caries in early childhood. Clinical significance The present study offers a new hypothesis for identifying individuals with poor oral health status. Early tools to detect the most vulnerable population sectors are critically important to reduce the global burden of caries and other oral diseases. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

The effects of mechanical and hydrothermal aging on microstructure and biaxial flexural strength of an anterior and a posterior monolithic zirconia
Conclusions AMZ showed the largest mean grain size, had the lowest BFS values, and was affected when mechanical cycling was involved. Monoclinic transformation was not found in any treatment for AMZ, but was found in IZr and PMZ when hydrothermal aging was used alone or when combined with mechanical cycling. PMZ showed similar behavior to the IZr. H induced to higher fracture probability. Keywords mechanical cycling; hydrothermal aging; anterior monolithic zirconia; posterior monolithic zirconia; biaxial flexure strength; crystalline phase. Clinical significance Translucent monolithic dental zirconia available on the mar...

Combination of straight and tilted implants for supporting screw-retained dental prostheses in atrophic posterior maxillae: A 2-year prospective study
Conclusions Upright and angled fixations inserted at posterior maxillary areas resulted in comparable survival rates and peri-implant MBL after two years. The marginal bone resorption around tilted implants depended on their location. Clinical significance Screw-retained restorations fixed to straight and tilted implants seem to be a safe treatment option in posterior atrophic maxillae. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

A new arginine-based dental adhesive system: formulation, mechanical and anti-caries properties
Conclusions Incorporation of 7% arginine did not affect the physical and mechanical properties of the adhesive. Arginine was released from the adhesive at a rate and concentration that exhibited antibacterial effects, regardless of shifts in biofilm conditions such as sugar availability and pH. Clinical Significance Secondary caries is recognized as the main reason for failure of dental restorations. The development of an arginine-based adhesive system has the potential to dramatically reduce the incidence and severity of secondary caries in adhesive restorations in a very economical fashion. Managing molars with severe molar-incisor hypomineralization: A cost-effectiveness analysis within German healthcare
Conclusions For molars with severe MIH, extraction at the optimal age and, if needed, orthodontic alignment can be cost-effective, especially when >1 molars are affected. For single molars where the chance of spontaneous alignment is low, Comp might also be considered. These findings apply to German healthcare and within the limitations of this study only. Clinical significance: When deciding how to manage molars with severe MIH, both tooth retention, with lower costs but higher needs for re-treatments, and tooth removal, with possible need for orthodontic alignment, can be considered. Considering cost-effectiveness...

Response of carious enamel to TiF4 varnish treatment under diverse cariogenic activities in situ
CONCLUSION Therefore, 4% TiF4 varnish was the only treatment able to improve enamel remineralization regardless of the cariogenic activity, while NaF varnish failed in preventing further demineralization under high cariogenic activity in situ. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE 4% TiF4 varnish showed better remineralizing effect compared to NaF varnish, which was seen regardless of the cariogenic activity. This is a promising finding to support the indication of TiF4 in the clinic. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)
