Investigation of the perceptual thresholds of tooth whiteness
Conclusions The thresholds for tooth whiteness perception in CIELAB space and WIO space were determined. The findings demonstrate that for a whitening treatment with a blue covarine optical technology, a colour change of about 2 WIO units would be noticeable. Clinical significance This study gives a better understanding of the tooth whiteness perception threshold, and will help clinicians identify perceivable differences in tooth colour during matching and whitening procedures. Real-time observations of tooth demineralization in 3 dimensions using X-ray microtomography
Conclusions A successful method has been developed to monitor real-time demineralization in 3 dimensions. Further work is now needed to create better models of true carious lesions. Clinical Significance Observation of the dynamics of demineralization and remineralization will aid in the development of therapies to treat and prevent dental caries. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Interrelation of periodontal parameters between asthmatics and nonasthmatics subjects: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions The data from this SR suggest that asthmatic patients may be more susceptible to negative periodontal changes, althought further high-quality research wuold be welcome. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Comparison of external and internal implant-abutment connections for implant supported prostheses. A systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion Internal connections had lower marginal bone loss when compared to external connections. However, the implant-abutment connection had no influence on the implant’s survival and complication rates. Based on the GRADE approach the evidence was classified as very low to moderate due to the study design, inconsistency, and publication bias. Thus, future research is highly encouraged. Clinical significance Internal connection implants should be preferred over external connection implants, especially when different risk factors that may contribute to increased marginal bone loss are present. Global burden of molar incisor hypomineralization
Conclusions MIH is highly prevalent across the globe. Certain (mainly low- and middle income) countries shoulder the majority of this burden. Clinical significance The consistently high prevalence and the large proportion of cases in need of care should be considered by both clinicians in their daily practice and healthcare planners and policy makers. Valuing the delivery of dental care: Heterogeneity in patients ’ preferences and willingness-to-pay for dental care attributes
Conclusions Large heterogeneity in patients’ preferences was detected. Understanding their preferences may improve the delivery of dental care. Clinical significance Dental care providers should pay particular attention to providing a detailed treatment explanation to their patients. Dental care for older and/or more educated patients should be more attentive to interpersonal characteristics. Faculty dental care provided by faculty members could be price competitive to private care, and student-provided care more affordable. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Potassium oxalate oral rinses for long-term relief from dentinal hypersensitivity: Three randomised controlled studies
Conclusions Rinses containing 1.5–2.0% KOX did not consistently demonstrate a benefit over placebo in relieving DH after 8w use. Clinical significance While favourable results were found in one of the investigations, this suite of studies shows that the possibility of inconsistent results exists even with the best designed and executed trials. Accuracy and precision of 3 intraoral scanners and accuracy of conventional impressions: a novel in vivo analysis method
Conclusion The methodology can be used for assessing accuracy of IOS and IMPR in vivo in up to five units bilaterally from midline. 3M and TRIOS had a higher accuracy than OMNI. IMPR overlapped both groups. Clinical Significance Intraoral scanners can be used as a replacement for conventional impressions when restoring up to ten units without extended edentulous spans. Non-pharmacological interventions for reducing mental distress in patients undergoing dental procedures: Systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions In summary, benefits of non-pharmacological interventions on reducing mental distress were demonstrated with largest effects being shown for hypnosis. However, further high quality trials are needed to strengthen the promising evidence. Clinical Significance This systematic review and meta-analysis indicated that non-pharmacological interventions may be beneficial for reducing mental distress in patients undergoing dental procedures and could thus be considered as valuable adjunct to standard care. Dentists ’ Decision Strategies for Suspicious Occlusal Caries Lesions in a National Dental PBRN Study
Conclusions The online vignette system suggests that clinical SOCL decision strategies are highly individualized and dentists do not use all cues available to them to make these decisions. Clinical Significance Prior to this study, there has been little evidence about how dentists use these cues (either individually or in combination) when judging the extent of caries progression. Such knowledge would be valuable when designing interventions to help dentists maximize the likelihood of appropriate treatment decisions. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Impact of prosthodontic rehabilitation on the masticatory performance of partially dentate older patients: can it predict nutritional state? Results from a RCT
Conclusions These results indicate that prosthodontic rehabilitation according to the principles of the SDA is equivalent to RPDPs in terms of restoration of chewing capacity for partially dentate older patients. However, masticatory performance may only have minor associations with nutritional status for this patient group. Clinical significance Replacing teeth with either RPDPs or SDA provides a prerequisite for efficient chewing. Further research is required to determine the impact of oral rehabilitation coupled with nutritional counselling for this patient population. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Randomized clinical study of wear of enamel antagonists against polished monolithic zirconia crowns
Conclusion Monolithic zirconia exhibited comparable wear of enamel compared with metal-ceramic crowns and control enamel after one year. Significance This study is clinically significant because the use of polished monolithic zirconia demonstrated comparable wear of opposing enamel to metal-ceramic and enamel antagonists. Cost-effectiveness Analysis of Two Impression Methods for the Fabrication of Mandibular Complete Dentures
Conclusions The results indicated that the total cost of the conventional method was significantly higher than that of the simplified method (p<0.001). Clinical significance The conventional impression method for fabricating mandibular CDs, which took additional 633 JPY for improvement of general satisfaction, is supposed to be clinically meaningful. The use of fdi criteria in clinical trials on direct dental restorations: a scoping review
Conclusions 16.3% of the studies used FDI criteria. The percentage of studies using them increased from 4.5% in 2010 to 50.0% in 2016. In average, 8.5 FDI criteria were used. The most employed criteria were: marginal adaptation (96.7%), staining (90.0%), fracture of material and retention (90.0%), recurrence of caries/erosion/abfraction (90.0%), post-operative sensitivity/tooth vitality (86.7%) and surface luster (60.0%). In addition, among the 27 on-going studies from ClinicalTrials.gov database, 51.9% use FDI criteria (including 87.5% with an open recruitment status). Clinical significance FDI criteria were reported as ...
