Polymerization kinetics of experimental bioactive composites containing bioactive glass
Conclusions Unsilanized BG fillers showed a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on polymerization rate and the DC. Extending the curing time from 20 to 40 s showed a limited potential to improve the DC of composites with higher BG amount. Significance The observed inhibitory effect of BG fillers on the polymerization of resin composites may have a negative influence on mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Root caries incidence and increment in the population – a systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression of longitudinal studies
Conclusions Length of follow-up influenced root caries estimates due to a bias towards relatively healthier older adults retained in the study. Root caries increased over time even among the healthier older adults. Clinical significance The increase in root caries, even among the healthier older adults, should be considered by both clinicians and healthcare planners/policy makers in their provision of services. Impact of Toothbrushing Frequency and Toothpaste Fluoride/Abrasivity Levels on Incipient Artificial Caries Lesion Abrasion
Conclusions: Higher fluoride concentration increased protection against the deleterious effect of high abrasive slurry. SL was higher if brushing was performed more than twice daily especially in low fluoride groups. Clinical significance Highly abrasive toothpaste formulations might cause more surface wear to incipient caries lesions, especially at higher brushing frequencies. Increasing the fluoride content may be beneficial at these circumstances. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Relationship between noncarious cervical lesions, cervical dentin hypersensitivity, gingival recession, and associated risk factors: a cross-sectional study
Conclusions The NCCLs and GR distributions increased with age; NCCLs, CDH, and GR had positive correlation; the lesions’ depth and morphology contributed to high levels of sensitivity and severity of recessions; age, gender, gastric disease, and occlusal trauma were relevant factors for the occurrence of NCCLs, CDH, and GR. Clinical significance The increasing distribution of NCCLs, CDH, and GR is closely associated with people’s lifestyles. Thus, it is important for the clinicians to recognize the etiological factors and their most relevant associations to prevent and control such alterations, in order to improve the...

The combined enamel remineralization potential of arginine and fluoride toothpaste
Conclusion Incorporation of 2% arginine in NaF toothpaste significantly increased the remineralization of enamel caries-like lesion when compared to NaF toothpaste; while 4% and 8% arginine in NaF toothpastes were ineffective in improving enamel remineralization. Clinical Significance In high-risk patients, daily use of 2% arginine in NaF toothpaste might provide a synergistic anti-caries effect given the proven prebiotic benefits of arginine in caries prevention and the demonstrated remineralization effect in the present study. Trend-analysis of dental hard-tissue conditions as function of tooth age
Conclusions Aging is proportionally related to the severity of caries, TW, staining, and inversely to dental fluorosis. Teeth become darker with age. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Are there associations between sleep bruxism, chronic stress, and sleep quality?
Conclusions The results of this study indicate an association between subjective sleep quality and subjective chronic stress, irrespective of the presence or absence of sleep bruxism. Clinical significance Chronic stress and sleep quality do not seem to be associated with sleep bruxism. (clinical trial no. NCT03039985) (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Edge strength of CAD/CAM materials
Conclusions Material, material thickness, and distance from the edge impact the edge force of CAD/CAM materials. Clinical significance CAD/CAM materials should be carefully selected on the basis of their individual edge force and performance during milling. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Heterogeneity in Cochrane and non-Cochrane meta-analyses in orthodontics
Conclusions Substantial statistical heterogeneity is present within a considerable number of orthodontic meta-analyses. Further efforts should be made to improve understanding of decisions to undertake meta-analyses and selection of studies eligible for inclusion. Clinical significance The consistency of meta-analyses could be improved with more careful consideration of individual study characteristics. Reduced heterogeneity in meta-analyses will ensue more solid evidence based decisions for clinical practice (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Water-associated attributes in the contemporary dentin bonding milieu
Conclusion It appears that the current trend of adhesive development has brought forth significant changes but lacks the vigor that demarcates progress and technological sublimity. Clinical significance The advent of the user friendly universal adhesives has brought forth significant changes to the dental adhesion arena. However, the elements that are critical for making resin-dentin bonds more durable to environmental challenges and less susceptible to degradation have remained unchanged at large. Molar cusp deformation evaluated by micro-CT and enamel crack formation to compare incremental and bulk-filling techniques
Conclusions Micro-CT was an effective method for evaluating the cusp deformation. Transillumination was effective for detecting enamel cracks. There were fewer negative effects of polymerization shrinkage in bulk-fill resin restorations using XTRA than for the conventional incremental filling technique using conventional composite resin Z100. Clinical significance Shrinkage and cusp deformation are directly related to the formation of enamel cracks. Cusp deformation and crack propagation may increase the risk of tooth fracture. Adolescent perceptions of orthodontic treatment risks and risk information: A qualitative study
Conclusions This study demonstrates that adolescent patients can understand information about the nature and severity of orthodontic treatment risks. However, adolescent patients can have false perceptions if the risks are unfamiliar, perceived only to have a future impact or if seen as easy to control. Adolescent patients must be provided with timely and easily accessible risk information and with practical solutions to prevent the risks of treatment. Clinical significance The views and experiences gathered in this study can assist clinicians to better understand their young patients' beliefs about treatment risks, facil...

Modified resin infiltration of non-, micro- and cavitated proximal caries lesions in vitro
Conclusion MFIR showed similar penetration into natural lesions as the commercial infiltrant, but better ability to fill cavitated areas. Clinical relevance MFIR and IR + FC might provide a new micro-invasive treatment for small cavitated proximal lesions. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Fuzzy gold standards: Approaches to handling an imperfect reference standard
Publication date: July 2018 Source:Journal of Dentistry, Volume 74, Supplement 1 Author(s): Tanya Walsh There are many challenging aspects to the design, conduct and interpretation of a diagnostic test accuracy study. Given the utilisation of digital technology in dentistry the issues and complexities of how these new technologies can be compared to potentially ‘fuzzy gold standards’ needs to be addressed. This narrative aims to provide the reader with a brief review of the nature of such studies, and in particular to introduce the reader to issues in the choice and use of clinical reference standards. Potential sol...

Efficacy of sealing occlusal caries with a flowable composite in primary molars: A 2-year randomized controlled clinical trial
Conclusion Sealing carious dentin may be used in dentistry since it did not alter the children anxiety, reduced the chair time and demonstrated clinical success rate and no radiographic difference in relation to the partial caries removal followed by restoration. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)
