Understanding the management and teaching of dental restoration repair: Systematic review and meta-analysis of surveys
Conclusions While most dentists state to perform repairs and the vast majority of dental schools teach repairs, the proportion of truly repaired restorations was low. A number of interventions to implement repair in dental practice can be deduced from our findings. Clinical Significance Partially defective restorations are common in dental practice. While repairs are taught and dentists are aware of the recommendation towards repairs, the actually performed proportion of repairs seems low. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Effect of dentin roughness on the adhesive performance in non-carious cervical lesions: a double-blind randomized clinical trial
Conclusion The dentin roughening before application of Tetric N-Bond Universal as self-etch and etch-and-rinse didn’t affect the clinical behavior of composite restorations placed in NCCLs. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Immediately loaded implant-supported full-arches: Peri-implant status after 1 –9years in a private practice
Conclusions Immediately-loaded full-arch restorations have an acceptable outcome after 1–9years of follow-up. However, the incidence of peri-implant diseases is high, and further research is needed to confirm whether these may compromise the predictability of the prostheses over the long-term. Clinical significance After a mean follow-up of 50months, the incidence of mucositis and peri-implantitis affected the 96.4% and 50% of patients, respectively. However, these results were reduced almost by half when the threshold of bleeding on probing and peri-implant bone loss applied was less strict. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Effect of flowable composites on the clinical performance of non-carious cervical lesions: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions We have moderate confidence that the resin composite viscosity does not influence the retention rates at 3 years. Similar marginal discoloration and better marginal adaptation was observed for flowable composites but the quality of evidence is doubtful. (PROSPERO CRD42015019560). (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Effect of toothpaste containing arginine on dental plaque —A randomized controlled in situ study
Conclusions Arginine-containing toothpaste can significantly reduce the lactic acid production from the in situ plaques to a low level without changing the metabolic activity, live/dead bacteria ratio and total biofilm biomass through a critical clinical randomized double-blinded crossover study. Clinical significance Arginine is a potential ecological prevention and control agent for dental caries. Meanwhile, the in situ model is an easy and pragmatic way to evaluate oral hygiene products (clinical trial registration: ChiCTR-INR-16010226). (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Diagnosis and staging of caries using spectral factors derived from the blue laser-induced autofluorescence spectrum
Conclusion Among the factors tested, the spectral slope at 550–600nm showed the best match with the caries specimens, in which their stage had been identified precisely. Clinical significance The 405nm laser-induced AF spectra can be applied to the diagnosis and staging of caries alone or in conjunction with conventional methods, such as visual, tactile, and X-ray inspection. The Relationship Between Dentine Hypersensitivity, Dietary Acid Intake And Erosive tooth wear.
Conclusion Contact time between the tooth and the acid may be a more important risk factor for DH compared to frequency of dietary acid intake or frequency of toothbrushing. Other possible aetiological factors should be considered. Clinicaltrials.gov number NCT02449434 Clinical Significance Increased contact time with dietary acids and sipping swishing or holding drinks in the mouth prior to swallowing should be addressed as an aetiological factor in DH. Toothpaste abrasivity and toothbrush filament stiffness may play a greater role in DH compared to frequency of toothbrushing. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Sleep behaviors in children with different frequencies of parental-reported sleep bruxism
Conclusion Among the various sleep behaviors under investigation, some sleep disorders and parasomnias seem to be associated with parental-reported SB in children. The influence of socioeconomic conditions on sleep behaviors seems not relevant. Based on these results, more specific studies on the association between different sleep behaviors are needed. Clinical significance Sleep behaviors, sociodemographic and socioeconomic features are correlated with SB in adults. However, in children, good evidence about this topic is lacking. This article give information to help clinicians evaluating sleep behaviors, sociodemographi...

Performance of pit and fissure sealants according to tooth characteristics: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions The performance of pit and fissure sealants does not seem to be negatively affected by mouth side, jaw, and tooth type, apart from the exception of a favorable retention on premolars. Clinical Significance Based on existing evidence, pit and fissure sealants can be effectively applied on any deciduous or permanent posterior teeth without adverse effects on their clinical performance. The effect of metal ions released from different dental implant-abutment couples on osteoblast function and secretion of bone resorbing mediators
Conclusion Osteoblastic cell viability, apoptosis, and regulation of bone resorbing mediators were significantly altered in the presence of metal ions. The change in cytokine levels expressed was directly proportional to the metal ion concentration. Clinical significance The observed biological responses to decreased amounts of metal ions released from platform-switched implant-abutment couples compared to platform-matched couples may partly explain the positive radiographic findings in respect to crestal bone level when utilising the “platform-switching” concept, which highlights the possible role of corrosion produc...

Effects on HbA1c in diabetic patients of adjunctive use of systemic antibiotics in nonsurgical periodontal treatment: a systematic review
Conclusion Adjunctive use of systemic antibiotic provides no statistically significant benefit in terms of HbA1c improvement in periodontal treatment of patients with diabetes. Clinical Significance Adjunctive use of systemic antibiotics associated with nonsurgical periodontal treatment provides no additional benefit in terms of HbA1c of diabetic patients. Clinicians should weigh the trade-off between risks and benefits provided by the use of systemic antibiotics before prescribing them for periodontal disease treatment. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Oral health-related quality of life in subjects with implant-supported prostheses: A systematic review
Conclusion For partially dentate patients, there is not enough evidence that implant-supported FDP are superior in terms of OHRQoL than conventional FDP, but moderate evidence suggests that implant-supported FDP perform better than conventional RDP. In edentulous patients, evidence suggests that only if OHRQoL at baseline is highly impaired and patients request implant treatment, IOD are superior than CD in terms of treatment-induced OHRQoL improvement. Clinical significance Patients can be informed that implant treatment is usually related to a significant improvement in OHRQoL. However, improvement is not necessarily hi...

In vitro biofilm formation on resin-based composites after different finishing and polishing procedures
Conclusions The tested F/P procedures significantly influenced RBCs surface properties but did not significantly affect S. mutans biofilm formation. The significant influence of the different RBCs tested on S. mutans biofilm formation suggests that material characteristics and composition play a greater role than SR. Clinical significance F/P procedures of RBCs may unexpectedly play a minor role compared to that of the restoration material itself in bacterial colonization. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)
