Are hypomineralised lesions on second primary molars (HSPM) a predictive sign of molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH)? A systematic review and a meta-analysis
Discussion The high heterogeneity (I2 = 88%) can be explained by the great variation present in number of participants and variable caries risk. Despite the limitations of the study, the presence of HSPM is predictive for MIH, with greater MIH prevalence in the presence of mild HSPM. Clinical significance Early detection and preventive intervention could reduce MIH complications. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Antibacterial and remineralizing orthodontic adhesive containing quaternary ammonium resin monomer and amorphous calcium phosphate nanoparticles
Conclusion PND adhesive with 5% MAE-DB and 40% NACP exhibits antibacterial and remineralizing capabilities, and did not adversely affect bond strength compared to commercial adhesive. Clinical significance Novel adhesive containing quaternary ammonium monomer and nano-amorphous calcium phosphate represents a promising candidate in combating enamel white spot lesions and even dental caries. Novel rechargeable calcium phosphate nanocomposite with antibacterial activity to suppress biofilm acids and dental caries
Conclusions The first CaP rechargeable and antibacterial composite was developed. Adding DMAHDM into the rechargeable NACP composite did not adversely affect the Ca and P ion release and recharge, and the composite had much less biofilm growth and lactic acid production, with CFU reduction by 3–4 log. Clinical significance This novel CaP rechargeable composite with long-term remineralization and antibacterial properties is promising for tooth restorations to inhibit caries. In vitro performance of the DIAGNOcam for detecting proximal carious lesions adjacent to composite restorations
Conclusion Within the limitations of this study, DIAGNO seems useful for detecting proximal carious lesions adjacent to restorations. Clinical relevance Near-infrared-light transillumination could be used as a radiation-free adjunct or alternative to RA for detecting carious lesions adjacent to composite restorations. An update on the reasons for placement and replacement of direct restorations
Conclusion In the years subsequent to the initial review, replacement of restorations still accounts for more than half of restorations placed by dentists, and the proportion of replacement restorations continues to increase. Trends towards the increased use of resin composites is noted in recent years. Clinical Significance Further research is required in this area to investigate changes in the approaches to the restoration of teeth, especially with increased understanding of the concept of restoration repair as an alternate to replacement. Effect of the application of surface treatments before and after sintering on the flexural strength, phase transformation and surface topography of zirconia
Conclusions Application of surface treatments at pre-sintered stage may be detrimental for zirconia ceramics in terms of flexural strength. Clinical significance Treating the surface of zirconia ceramic before sintering process is not recommended due to significant decrease in flexural strength values. 2W − 4W Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiations can be regarded as alternative surface treatment methods when zirconia restoration would be subjected to veneer ceramic firing procedures. Implant and root canal treatment: survival rates and factors associated with treatment outcome
Conclusions Implant therapy exhibited significantly lower failures when compared to root canal treatment, but the selection of either treatment should be based on multiple factors. Higher age and anxiety were also significantly associated with root canal and implant treatment failure. Clinical significance Clinicians are in an increased dilemma that affects the decision-making process due to the inadequate evidence in regards to the question of retention or extraction of a tooth in the natural dentition. This study demonstrated that both root canal and implant treatments are sound options with high survival rates; however...

Effectiveness of prosthodontic interventions and survival of remaining teeth in adult patients with shortened dental arches − a systematic review
Conclusions there is currently insufficient evidence to recommend one tooth replacement strategy over another in adult patients with reduced dentitions. Clinical significance There is a need for further research as there are insufficient numbers of good quality randomised controlled trials currently available. Authors should be encouraged to adhere to CONSORT guidelines for randomized controlled trials, and report findings in such a way that facilitates future meta-analysis. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Teaching of posterior composites in dental schools in Japan – 30 years and beyond
Conclusions It is hoped that measures intended to increase the clinical experience of restoring teeth with direct composite-resin for dental students in Japan will be effective, providing opportunity to bring dental education in Japan more into line with international norms. Remineralisation of enamel white spot lesions pre-treated with chitosan in the presence of salivary pellicle
Conclusions Chitosan pre-treatment can enhance WSL remineralisation with bioglass biomaterials when a short-term salivary pellicle is present. A further investigation using a long-term pH-cycling model with mature pellicle is suggested with regards to clinical application. Clinical significance Chitosan pre-treatment has the potential in clinical application to remineralise subsurface lesions to achieve lesion consolidation. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Monolithic zirconia crowns in the aesthetic zone in heavy grinders with severe tooth wear – An observational case-series
Conclusions Within the limitations of this study, we conclude that the rate of clinical complications was low and that the patients were satisfied with the aesthetic as well as the function of the monolithic zirconia crowns. Clinical significance Monolithic zirconia crowns may provide a valid treatment modality in the aesthetic zone in patients with severe tooth wear. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Validation of assessment of intraoral digital photography for evaluation of dental restorations in clinical research
Conclusions Under the limits of this study, the assessment of digital photography performed by intraoral camera is an indirect diagnostic method valid for the evaluation of dental restorations, mainly in posterior teeth. This method should be employed taking into account the higher detection of defects provided by the images, which are not always clinically relevant. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Effect of thickness on optical properties of monolithic CAD-CAM ceramics
Conclusions Material type and thickness can be expected to affect color change and relative translucency of the restorations made with preshaded MonZr, LDS and ZLS materials. Except for 0.5 mm thick ZLS material, color changes of all studied materials were within the clinically acceptable limits. Except ZLS material, color changes of other materials were not significantly affected by thickness. Staining in coffee was not found to affect translucency, and the materials’ translucency parameters were ranked from high to low as LDS, ZLS and MonZr at each thickness studied. Secondary caries development and the role of a matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor: a clinical in situ study
Conclusion The treatment of dentin with MMP inhibitor was not able to slow down the secondary caries wall lesion development in this in situ study. Significance The dentin treatment with 2% CHX did not prevent secondary caries wall lesion initiation. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Influence of the Loci of Non-Cavitated Fissure Caries on Its Detection with Optical Coherence Tomography
Conclusion Visual assessment of B-scans with the interpretation criteria resulted in both high specificity and sensitivity and was not affected by loci location. OCT width measurement of wall loci is in agreement with PLM. Clinical significance Unanimous high sensitivity in this and previous studies indicate that visual assessment of B-scans reliably rule out NCFC. Detection accuracy was not affected by loci location. Width of wall loci and/or height of slope loci in OCT B-scan are to be used for monitoring NCFC but not height of wall loci. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)
