Diagnosis of tuberculosis pleurisy with adenosine deaminase (ADA): a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Authors: Gui X, Xiao H Abstract This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to determine accuracy and usefulness of adenosine deaminase (ADA) in diagnosis of tuberculosis pleurisy. Medline, Google scholar and Web of Science databases were searched to identify related studies until 2014. Two reviewers independently assessed quality of studies included according to standard Quality Assessment of Diagnosis Accuracy Studies (QUADAS) criteria. The sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio and other parameters of ADA in diagnosis of tuberculosis pleurisy were analyzed with Meta-DiSC1.4 software,...

Adrenal cortical adenoma with the maximal diameter greater than 5 cm: can they be differentiated from adrenal cortical carcinoma by CT?
Authors: Tian L, Dong J, Mo YX, Cui CY, Fan W Abstract To study the computed tomographic findings of adrenal adenoma with the maximal diameter greater than 5 cm and to discuss whether such tumor can be differentiated from adrenal carcinoma by CT examination. Fourteen consecutive patients with adrenal adenoma with the maximal diameter larger than 5 cm, proven pathologically, were enrolled. All patients underwent non-enhanced and contrast-enhanced CT examination. The CT findings, including size, shape, edge, density on non-enhanced CT and schedule of reinforcement after contrast administration for each lesio...

Exercise improves cognitive function in aging patients.
This study sought to explore the restorative effects of exercise in older patients with existing cognitive disabilities. Ninety-six patients with mild cognitive impairment were placed in an exercise program for six months. Following completion of the program, participants were assessed via the Chinese Mini Mental Status Examination (MMSE), Activity of Daily Living (ADL) assessment, and body movement testing and compared to a control group of patients with mild cognitive impairment who did not participate in the exercise program (N = 102). Statistical analyses were performed using the Student's t-test and chi-square test to...

Radiofrequency ablation versus surgical resection for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma conforming to the Milan criteria: systemic review and meta-analysis.
In conclusion, surgical resection remains the better choice of treatment for HCC conforming to the Milan criteria, whereas RFA should be considered as an effective alternative treatment when surgery is not feasible. As for RFA technique, laparoscopic approach may be more effective than percutaneous approach for HCC conforming to Milan criteria. Vascular relaxation induced by Eucommiae Ulmoides Oliv. and its compounds Oroxylin A and wogonin: implications on their cytoprotection action.
Authors: Akinyi M, Gao XM, Li YH, Wang BY, Liu EW, Chai LJ, JawoBah A, Fan GW Abstract The vascular relaxation action of Eucommiae Ulmoides Oliv. also known as Duzhong has been seen on arteries of the heart such as the aorta and the coronary artery which are elastic in nature. Duzhong is historically an active ingredient commonly used in hypertensive herbal prescriptions in China. This work investigated the vasodilating effect of Duzhong and its compounds (wogonin 10 μM and oroxylin-A) in the isolated intact rat heart, perfused retrograde according the method of Langendorff and the cytoprotective effect i...

Exclusion of IL-21 in the pathogenesis of OVA-induced asthma in mice.
Authors: Cheng S, Chen H, Wang A, Bunjhoo H, Cao Y, Xie J, Xu Y, Xiong W Abstract Asthma is characterized by airway inflammation, mucus overproduction, and airway hyperreactivity. Cytokines, especially T helper 2-derived cytokines interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, and IL-13, are involved in the pathogenesis of asthma. IL-21 has a variety of effects on the immune system. However, the contribution of IL-21 to the development of allergic diseases is currently controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of IL-21 on asthma airway inflammation in vivo. A murine ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic ast...

Association of GSTP1 Ile105Val polymorphism with risk of esophageal cancer: a meta-analysis of 21 case-control studies.
CONCLUSION: The results from this meta-analysis support a significant association between the GSTP1 Ile105Val polymorphism and risk of EC, particularly in a subgroup with ESCC and in the Caucasian population. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to validate our findings. PMID: 25419352 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Medicine)

Diagnostic value of combining CA 19-9 and K-ras gene mutation in pancreatic carcinoma: a meta-analysis.
CONCLUSION: CA 19-9 was a high sensitive and K-ras was a high specific method in diagnosing patients with pancreatic cancer. These two modalities probably act different roles during different conditions in diagnosing pancreatic carcinoma. Effects of atrazine on the oxidative damage of kidney in Wister rats.
Authors: Liu W, Du Y, Liu J, Wang H, Sun D, Liang D, Zhao L, Shang J Abstract The environmental persistence and bioaccumulation of herbicide atrazine may pose a significant threat to human health. In this experiment, 4 weeks old female Wister rats were treated by 0, 5, 25 and 125 mg/kg atrazine respectively for 28 days, and the oxidative stress responses as well as the activations of Nrf2 signaling pathway in kidney tissues induced by atrazine were observed. The results showed that after be treated by atrazine, the Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine (CREA) levels in serum were increased, the contents...

A virtual reality model of the clivus and surgical simulation via transoral or transnasal route.
CONCLUSION: The simulation of the VR model offers a straightforward, three-dimensional, interactive understanding of the size and shape of the clivus, and its relationships with the surrounding blood vessels and bones. It also demonstrates simulated operational procedures such as opening the surgical window, measuring the exposure distance and angles, and determining the critical boundaries in relation to key structures such as the brainstem and arteries. Digitalized VR modeling appears to be helpful for understanding the anatomy of the clivus and its surgical approaches. PMID: 25419358 [PubMed - as supplied by pub...
