A staggered edge: End-of-life care in patients with severe mental illness
Approximately 6% of the population suffers from severe persistent mental illness (SPMI): mental illness that is chronic or recurrent, requires ongoing intensive psychiatric treatment, and significantly impairs functioning [1]. SPMI is associated with premature mortality across all age groups [1,2]. Despite common misassumptions that most individuals with SPMI die prematurely from violence and suicide, the majority of excess mortality is due to chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and dementia [3,4]. Health care utilization in outpatients with somatoform disorders: Descriptives, interdiagnostic differences, and potential mediating factors
Somatoform disorders are characterized by increased health care utilization producing high health costs. The aim of this study was to assess facets of and interdiagnostic differences in health care use in somatoform disorders and to examine health anxiety, symptom-related disability, depression, and phobic anxiety as potential mediating factors of the relationship between somatization and health care use. Efficacy of transcranial magnetic stimulation for treatment resistant depression among active duty service members
Depression is not uncommon among military personnel with an estimated prevalence of one in eight deployed service members meeting the diagnostic criteria [1]. Previously published studies also suggest that active duty service members may prefer complementary and alternative approaches over standard pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, particularly when those interventions have produced less than optimum results [2 –6]. Examining the relationship between physical illness and depression: Is there a difference between inflammatory and non inflammatory diseases? A cohort study
There is evidence that inflammation may play a role in the association between physical illness and depression. Our aim was to compare the impact of chronic medical conditions on incidence of depression and to examine if risk of depression varies in terms of the presence and degree of inflammation. The epidemiology of back pain and its relationship with depression, psychosis, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and stress sensitivity: Data from 43 low- and middle-income countries
Back pain (BP) is a leading cause of global disability. However, population-based studies investigating its impact on mental health outcomes are lacking, particularly among low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Thus, the primary aims of this study were to: (1) determine the epidemiology of BP in 43 LMICs; (2) explore the relationship between BP and mental health (depression spectrum, psychosis spectrum, anxiety, sleep disturbances and stress). “I would never want to have a mental health diagnosis on my record”: A survey of female physicians on mental health diagnosis, treatment, and reporting
Physicians have high rates of suicide and depression. Most state medical boards require disclosure of mental health problems on physician licensing applications, which has been theorized to increase stigma about mental health and prevent help-seeking among physicians. Beyond Integrated Care Competencies: The Imperative for Adaptive Expertise
A large number of patients with comorbid physical and mental illness face increasing issues with access, cost and quality of care. With the growing recognition of these issues, health care systems in North America are embracing the development of integrated (collaborative) care (IC) models aimed at improving care for these patients [1]. A growing body of data and systematic reviews support the implementation of these models by showing their impact on both physical and mental health outcomes, including improved satisfaction and quality of life [2]. Three-year mortality in relation to early hospitalization and number of outpatient clinic visits in people with newly-diagnosed bipolar disorder
Whether the early treatment pattern in people with bipolar disorder (BD) could influence later mortality remains to be determined. We aimed to explore the potential effects of early hospitalization and number of outpatient clinic visits on the three-year mortality in patients with newly-diagnosed BD. Predictors of treatment utilization and unmet treatment need among individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder from a national sample
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a chronic psychiatric condition associated with significant disability that often remains untreated. Sociodemographic and family-level factors may serve as predictors of unmet treatment need, identifying groups that would most benefit from policies aimed at increasing access to the mental healthcare system.
