Beyond Integrated Care Competencies: The Imperative for Adaptive Expertise

A large number of patients with comorbid physical and mental illness face increasing issues with access, cost and quality of care. With the growing recognition of these issues, health care systems in North America are embracing the development of integrated (collaborative) care (IC) models aimed at improving care for these patients [1]. A growing body of data and systematic reviews support the implementation of these models by showing their impact on both physical and mental health outcomes, including improved satisfaction and quality of life [2].
