Racial and ethnic differences in mental healthcare utilization consistent with potentially effective care: The role of patient preferences
Ethnic minorities are less likely than Whites to initiate and continue mental healthcare. Minorities also prefer non-medical approaches to address mental health issues. We evaluated sector-type as a modifier of the association of race/ethnicity with service utilization for mental health. We hypothesized that minorities utilize non-mental health sectors at rates consistent with guidelines and similar to Whites. (Source: General Hospital Psychiatry)

Letter to the Editor regarding “Severe mental illness and emergency department service use nationally in the Veterans Health Administration”
I read your article Severe Mental Illness and Emergency Department Service Use Nationally in the Veterans Health Administration [1] with interest and would like to add insight from VHA Emergency Medicine Community. Nationally, access to mental health care service for non-Veterans of moderate means is severely limited [2]. Not unexpectedly this limit drives care to Emergency Departments and the limited mental health infrastructure outside of VHA results in long ED stays [3]. However, the referenced NEHI publication excludes federal health systems and extrapolation of these finding to VA may not be valid [4]. (Source: Genera...

Response to editorial
We thank the author for their comments, as they reinforce some of the points we hoped to make about clinical aspects of VA ED care. They state in that “perhaps ED visits are not necessarily a failure of public health within VA, but rather an appropriate venue to care for Veterans with health conditions not yet solved by society.” We agree with this statement, and as we noted in the paper, the extensive access veterans have to both psychiatric and medical outpatient care suggests that their high levels of ED use is unlikely to reflect poor access to needed servicers but rather is “primarily attributable to the well-kn...

The yield from vitamin D screening among psychiatric inpatients
Extensive information is available concerning the physical health effects of vitamin D deficiency [1,2]. There is less information on the mental health benefits of vitamin D, but there is evidence that mental health patients have high rates of vitamin D deficiency, like the population in general [3 –10]. In view of the above literature, we obtained serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels from a sample of psychiatric inpatients in a Trauma Program specializing in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dissociative disorders, to determine if low vitamin D levels occur in this population. Conversion disorder: A systematic review of current terminology
It has been argued that the label given to unexplained neurological symptoms is an important contributor to their often poor acceptance, and there has been recent debate on proposals to change the name from conversion disorder. There have been multiple studies of layperson and clinician preference and this article aimed to review these. (Source: General Hospital Psychiatry)
