An Expert Consensus on Core Competencies in Integrated Care for Psychiatrists
All psychiatry residents in Canada are required to train in integrated care (also known as “shared care” or “collaborative care”). We sought to define the competencies required for integrated care practice, with an emphasis on those competencies necessary for all psychiatric postgraduate learners regardless of their intended future practice setting or population. A Comparative Study with Depressed Patients on the Acceptability of Placebo Use
High rates of placebo responses are consistently reported in patients with major depressive disorder. Nonetheless, treating depression with placebo is still ethically controversial and generally prohibited in the clinical setting. In the present study we assess the acceptability of placebo usage among depressed patients. (Source: General Hospital Psychiatry)

From impulse to action among military personnel hospitalized for suicide risk: alcohol consumption and the reported transition from suicidal thought to behavior
Alcohol use is associated with unplanned or impulsive suicide attempts. Although unplanned suicide attempts assume a rapid transition for suicidal impulse to action, many studies do not quantify the time elapsed from suicidal impulse to action. The current study was designed to clarify how alcohol use facilitates the transition from suicidal impulse to action among U.S. Army personnel. We hypothesized that alcohol consumption during the 24 h preceding a suicide attempt would be associated with significantly faster transition from suicidal impulse to action, but would be unrelated to medical lethality. Factitious Disorder: a systematic review of 455 cases in the professional literature
Patients with factitious disorder (FD) fabricate illness, injury or impairment for psychological reasons and, as a result, misapply medical resources. The demographic and clinical profile of these patients has yet to be described in a sufficiently large sample, which has prevented clinicians from adopting an evidence-based approach to FD.The present study aimed to address this issue through a systematic review of cases reported in the professional literature. Risk of Bipolar Disorder in Patients with COPD: a Population-based Cohort Study
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remains a major public health problem such that the World Health Organization (WHO) reported COPD as the fourth leading cause of death worldwide in 2004 in the Global Burden of Disease Project. Estimates suggest that COPD will rise from the sixth to the third most common cause of death worldwide by 2020 [1]. COPD is primarily a pulmonary disease, characterized by progressive and irreversible airflow obstruction. COPD commonly results from smoking-related inflammation and destruction of lung. Improving Perinatal Depression Care: The Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Project for Moms
Perinatal depression is common and associated with poor birth, infant, and child outcomes. Screening for perinatal depression alone does not improve treatment rates or patient outcomes. This paper describes the development, implementation, and outcomes of a new and low-cost population-based program to help providers address perinatal depression, the Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Project for Moms (MCPAP for Moms).
