Examining psychotropic medication use among youth in the U.S. by race/ethnicity and psychological impairment
Clinical practice guidelines underscore the need for careful evaluation of the risk-benefit ratio of psychotropic medications treating mental health disorders among youth. While it is well known that racial/ethnic disparities exist in psychotropic medication use, little is known about whether these differences are driven by over-prescribing among white youth, under-prescribing among minority youth, or both. To build evidence in this area, this study examined racial/ethnic differences in the prescription of psychotropic medications among youth with and without psychological impairment. Posttraumatic stress symptoms as predictive of prognosis after acute coronary syndrome
Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) encompasses a group of conditions caused by reduced blood flow in the coronary arteries. They include unstable angina (UA), non-ST-elevated myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), and ST-elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI) [1]. Depression is a well-established risk factor for ACS [2], and screening for depression is recommended as a secondary strategy to prevent ACS in addition to other approaches such as quitting smoking, managing weight, engaging in physical activity, controlling blood pressure, managing diabetes mellitus (DM), managing lipids, undertaking cardiac rehabilitation, and taking medic...

Cardiovascular disease risk in patients with schizophrenia
Rekhi Gurpreet et al. conducted a study titled as ‘Estimating 10-year cardiovascular disease risk in Asian patients with schizophrenia’ [1]. The authors must be complimented for conducting this comparative cross-sectional study to examine the cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk using Framingham risk score (FRS) [2], and specially FRS using body m ass index (FRSBMI) which was used first time in patients with schizophrenia. BMI is more feasible and cost effective than blood lipids in a clinical setting. (Source: General Hospital Psychiatry)

Smoking and common mental disorders in patients with chronic conditions: An analysis of data collected via a web-based screening system
Smoking is the largest preventable cause of death and disability in the UK and remains pervasive in people with mental disorders and in general hospital patients. We aimed to quantify the prevalence of mental disorders and smoking, examining associations between mental disorders and smoking in patients with chronic physical conditions. Making the cut: Depression screening in urban general hospital clinics for culturally diverse Latino populations
We examined whether the cut-point 10 for the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ9) depression screen used in primary care populations is equally valid for Mexicans (M), Ecuadorians (E), Puerto Ricans (PR) and non-Hispanic whites (W) from inner-city hospital-based primary care clinics; and whether stressful life events elevate scores and the probability of major depressive disorder (MDD). Continuity of medication management in Medicaid patients with chronic comorbid conditions: An examination by mental health status
This study examined whether patients with SMI (depression and schizophrenia) and comorbid CMCs experience greater discontinuity of prescribing than patients with CMCs alone. (Source: General Hospital Psychiatry)

Severe mental illness and emergency department service use nationally in the Veterans Health Administration
Patients with psychiatric diagnoses have been reported to have greater numbers of ED visits than other health system users [1]. Studies have shown that patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder [2], major depressive disorder [3,4], posttraumatic stress disorder [5], anxiety disorder [4], and substance use disorders [6,7] have all been found to have high rates of ED use. Whether this greater level of ED use reflects additional needs, poor access to medical or psychiatric services, or unaddressed psychosocial needs, has not been systematically examined. Association of suicidal ideation with depression 1year after an acute coronary syndrome episode
Patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) have an increased risk of suicidal behavior [1]. The longitudinal effects of suicidal behaviors are typically studied in depressive patients [2] and predict the relapse and persistence of depression [3]. This issue has not been investigated in ACS patients. The spectrum of suicidal behavior ranges from suicidal ideation (SI) to completion; clinical ACS studies typically utilize SI as a phenotype. Thus, this study examined the effect of SI, evaluated within 2weeks of an ACS episode, on depressive outcomes at 1-year. (Source: General Hospital Psychiatry)

A concept mapping study on perpetuating factors of functional somatic symptoms from clinicians ’ perspective
The aim of this concept mapping study was to identify the structure and alleged importance of perpetuating factors of functional somatic symptoms (FSS) from the perspective of professionals. Further, we examined to which extent these factors have been addressed in scientific literature. (Source: General Hospital Psychiatry)

The impact of major depression on heart rate variability and endothelial dysfunction in patients with stable coronary artery disease
Depression is an independent risk factor in cardiovascular diseases. Changes in the cardiac autonomic functions and pro-inflammatory processes are potential biological factors. Endothelial dysfunction plays an important role in the etiopathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Our objective was to evaluate the impact of major depression on heart rate variability and endothelial dysfunction in patients with stable CAD. (Source: General Hospital Psychiatry)

Emotional nonacceptance within the context of traumatic event exposure: The explanatory role of anxiety sensitivity for traumatic stress symptoms and disability among Latinos in primary care setting
Research has found that Latinos (versus non-Latino Whites) evince higher rates of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTS) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet little attention has been given to intra-individual, emotion-related processes to explicate the higher incidence of these symptoms among Latinos.
