Reversible Transient Lesion of the Corpus Callosum Secondary to Meningoencephalitis
A 40-year-old male, presented with right-sided weakness, ataxia, expressive dysphasia and was treated for cerebrovascular accident (CVA). However, he became increasingly confused, disorientated and reported worsening headache along with fevers, photophobia and neck stiffness. On further history, the patient ’s family reported the patient as being more confused and incoherent rather than having true ataxia and expressive dysphasia. CSF results were consistent with viral meningoencephalitis and MRI revealed a crescent shaped splenial lesion. He was treated empirically with ceftriaxone and acyclovir. On follow up, he remain...

Enhancing cultural awareness education for undergraduate medical students
Conclusion Cultural immersion has great potential to elicit positive shifts in attitudinal and knowledge related aspects of cultural awareness at early stages in medical curricula . Negative directions also suggest that students question their beliefs and behaviours relating to cultural knowledge. (Source: Australasian Medical Journal - AMJ)

Entrapment of the Martin-Gruber branch of median nerve in the forearm
We report a rare case of a dual neuro-vascular variation, which was observed in the right extremity of male cadaver. About an inch inferior to the elbow joint, three branches arose from the median nerve. These were the anterior interosseous branch, a Martin-Gruber branch (MGB) and a muscular branch. The MGB coursed infero-medially to join with the ulnar nerve by running posterior to the ulnar artery. It was surprising to observe that the MGB passed between the ulnar artery and its venae comitantes. There was an acute angulation of the MGB here, suggesting entrapment at this site. Systemic Mastocytosis associated with Minimal Change Disease
Systemic Mastocytosis (SM) has not previously been reported in association with minimal change disease (MCD). Mastocytosis is a rare myeloproliferative disease that is characterised by uncontrolled proliferation of aberrant mast cells. This can lead to a wide variety of symptoms and can present as either a cutaneous or a systemic disease. Systemic manifestations usually include bone marrow, intestine, liver and splenic infiltration of mast cells, with reports of renal manifestations being rare. This is a case report of a 70-year-old man who was known to have Systemic Mastocytosis and who presented with nephrotic range prot...

Bilateral Parotid Involvement as the Solitary Metastatic Site from Squamous Cell Lung Cancer
We report an asymptomatic metastasis from the lung cancer to the intra-parotid lymph node which was detected by the FDG PET scan and subsequently confirmed by fine needle aspiration cytology. The case is unique as solitary metastatic involvement of the parotid from non-head and neck tumors are extremely rare and thus, may be missed during staging evaluation. Half and half nail or Lindsay ’s nail
A 62-year-old diabetic patient came to the outpatient department due to increasing tiredness in the past few months. On examination, his distal half of fingernails revealed pinkish red transverse band which is sharply demarcated by a dull white band proximally, consistent with half and half nail. Further evaluation showed evidence of chronic kidney disease due to long standing poorly controlled diabetes. Although half and half nail is seen in many conditions, it is relatively a specific clinical marker of end stage kidney disease and hence serves as an important diagnostic clue. A single qualitative study can show same findings as years of quantitative research: Obstructive Sleep Apnea as an example
Conclusion With the use of quantitative research methods it took decades to discover things that we found in one simple qualitative study. We therefore urge scientists to use more often these qualitative methods when looking for S&AF of diseases and syndromes. (Source: Australasian Medical Journal - AMJ)
