Evaluation of lethal effect of microwave exposure on protoscolices of hydatid cyst in vitro
Conclusions It seems that, microwaves especially in the repetitive mode, may be used as a supplementary measure for both treatment and prevention of hydatidosis. (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease)

Evaluation of anticonvulsant and neuroprotective effects of camel milk in strychnine-induced seizure model
Conclusions Anticonvulsant activity of camel milk could be due to potentiation of glycinergic and GABAergic activities both. Antioxidant activity can also amplify its antiepileptic activity. Further studies are required to confirm the exact mechanism of action. (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease)

Correlation between eosinophil count and soil-transmitted helminth infection in children
Conclusions Eosinophil counts correlated strongly with ascariasis while weakly with trichuriasis. We determined that eosinophil count may be used as a marker of STH infection. (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease)

Additional records of vector mosquito diversity collected from Al Khor district of North-eastern Qatar
Conclusions The north-eastern area of Qatar harbors is the most important industrial city in the country, which has witnessed an increase in the number of expatriate people. Because of the increase of reported mosquitoes, there is an urgent need for a surveillance program. This will allow us to build a database of mosquito vectors in the area. Interferon-γ +874A/T polymorphism associated with Toxoplasma gondii seropositivity in HIV patients
Conclusions The IFN-γ +874A/T polymorphism is associated with IgG anti-T. gondii seropositivity. This polymorphism might be useful to predict the susceptibility of HIV patients to toxoplasmosis. (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease)

Faunal identification and frequency distribution of wild sand flies infected with Leishmania tropica
Conclusions It was thus concluded that wild-caught Phlebotomus sergenti naturally infected with Leishmania tropica was mainly incriminated by molecular method to be the principal vector of cutaneous leishmaniosis in this endemic focus. (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease)

Spatial distribution of soil-transmitted helminthiases and co-infection with schistosomiasis among school children in Nigeria
Conclusions Though hookworm infection remains an important public health problem in the area, its infection levels varied between children's locations. The spatial distribution maps in this study are important and useful for planning, evaluating and implementing adequate control programmes for STHs among school-aged children. Assessment of an ELISA for serodiagnosis of active pulmonary tuberculosis in a Cuban population
Conclusions An ELISA using a multi-antigen mix containing recombinant immuno-dominant antigens of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, namely, rCFP-10, rESAT-6, rAPA, rPstS-1 and rAg85, increases the sensitivity and specificity compared with that using the single antigens and shows potential as a complementary tool for the diagnosis of active pulmonary tuberculosis in Cuba. Severe tuberculous retinal vasculitis in healthy adults
We presented three cases of ocular tuberculosis in young healthy adults who presented with progressive blurring of vision with florid retinal vasculitis seen on funduscopy. Two of them were with no bacillus Calmette-Guerin scar. Fundus fluorescein angiography confirmed the presence of occlusive vasculitis with extensive area of ischemia. All cases showed a raise in erythrocyte sedimentation rate and strongly positive Mantoux tests. Pan-retinal photocoagulation was given to all patients. Two cases responded well to anti-tubercular therapy followed by oral steroids and regained normal vision in both eyes. One patient was not...

Risk factors associated with brucellosis among slaughtered cattle: Epidemiological insight from two metropolitan abattoirs in Southwestern Nigeria
Conclusions Our findings reveal low sero-prevalence of brucellosis among slaughtered cattle in Southwestern Nigeria. Sex and location of abattoirs where animals are slaughtered are major risk factors to be considered in the epidemiology of the disease. Therefore, to promote public health, trade cattle meant for slaughter in Nigeria and African countries where brucellosis is endemic, should be monitored, and positive animals be excluded from the food chain.
