Error in laboratory report data for platelet count assessment in patients suspicious for dengue: a note from observation
This study is a retrospective analysis on laboratory report data of complete blood count in cases with suspicious dengue in a medical center within 1 month period during the outbreak season on October, 2015. According to the studied period, there were 184 requests for complete blood count for cases suspected for dengue. From those 184 laboratory report records, errors can be seen in 12 reports (6.5%). This study demonstrates that there are considerable high rate of post-analytical errors in laboratory reports. Interestingly, the platelet count in those erroneous reports can be unreliable and ineffective or problematic when...

Bioaccumulation of heavy metals and parasitic fauna in Synodontis clarias (Linnaeus, 1758) and Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus (Lacepede, 1803) from Lekki Lagoon, Lagos, Nigeria
Conclusions The findings of the concentrations of the trace elements in the aquatic habitat as well as the sediment were below the permissible limit of Federal Ministry of Environment. These findings confirmed that the aquatic habitat was adequate for fishing activity and that the consumption of fish species therein are safe. However, it should be noted that there was bioaccumulation of trace elements in the fish tissues which should not pose any danger to man. Therefore, a regular monitoring of the levels of trace elements in the water body as well as in the fauna should be regularly undertaken. (Source: Asian Pacific Jou...

Frequency of typhoid fever and its association with seasonal variations in Taxila, Pakistan
Conclusions The present study highlights a higher burden of typhoid fever in Taxila and the surrounding areas population that directly reflects the poor hygienic condition and contamination of drinking water. The frequency of typhoid fever fluctuates with seasonal variations as higher rates found during the summer as compared to winter season. (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease)

Epidemiological study of cutaneous leishmaniasis in southwest of Iran during 2001 –2011
Conclusions Epidemiological parameters such as age, gender, occupation, season, residence (urban, rural) and lesion location in endemic regions have had significant effects on the prevalence of CL in Susangerd county and the findings can be effective for assessing disease prevention programs. In addition, CL might become a serious dermatological health problem in the near future due to a great population movement to the neighboring country Iraq with a high incidence to an endemic area. A 5-year period (2010 –2014) retrospective study of human cutaneous leishmaniasis in Ahvaz County, southwest of Iran
Conclusions In this study 59.1% of patients were males and this may due to their job, more contact with Leishmania vectors and wearing fewer cloths. Most of the lesions were placed in hands, feet and face. Therefore the necessity of choosing the appropriate clothing, using mosquito nets seem to be important. Emerging drug resistance in Plasmodium falciparum: A review of well-characterized drug targets for novel antimalarial chemotherapy
Publication date: July 2016 Source:Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease, Volume 6, Issue 7 Author(s): Arnish Chakraborty Malaria is a life-threatening, highly infectious parasitic disease caused by the intracellular, protozoan parasites of Plasmodium species. The most severe form of the disease is caused by Plasmodium falciparum, an Apicomplexa parasite with a remarkable ability to acquire resistance to antimalarial medications. Drug resistant malaria is a serious public health concern in the tropical and sub-tropical nations of the world, rendering conventional antimalarial medication ineffective in several reg...

Bridging the importance of Toll like receptors in human viral infections
Publication date: July 2016 Source:Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease, Volume 6, Issue 7 Author(s): Umar Saeed, Zahra Zahid Piracha Toll-like receptors (TLRs) have important role in innate immunity, since they detect pathogen-associated molecular patterns on a wide range of microbes, leading towards activation of innate immune responses and orchestration of adaptive immune response. Most of the viruses have evolved mechanisms to subvert for the benefit of virus and to evade immune system. Literature search was performed from Pubmed and Google Scholar search engines. Among thirteen different types of TLRs, TL...

Scavenger receptor class-A plays diverse role in innate immunity, cell signaling and different pathologies
Publication date: July 2016 Source:Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease, Volume 6, Issue 7 Author(s): Aamir Rana, Syed Sajjad Sattar, Afshann Shahzad, Ghulam Muhammad Ali, Yasir Waheed Evidences have been increasingly provided to comfirm that lipid accumulation in cells contributes to the progression of pathogeneses. The receptor-mediated lipid uptake is the crucial step for lipid retention as scavenger receptors class-A (SR-A) is not controlled via negative feedback by cytoplasmic cholesterol and therefore it plays a fundamental role in the formation of foam cells. Along with participation in apoptosis,...
