Acute toxicity of caprine alpha S2-casein protein on the microstructures and mineral profiles of rat ileum
Conclusions This research concludes that the caprine CSN1S2 protein is able to stimulate the ileum toxicity up to 2 000 mg/kg body weight dosage and change sodium, phosphorus, sulphur and selenium homeostasis of ileum in female rats. (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease)

Occurrence of ectoparasitic arthropods (Siphonaptera, Acarina, and Anoplura) on rodents of Khorasan Razavi Province, northeast of Iran
Conclusions Overall infestation rate was 42.13 % (83 out of 197 rodents). The most and least frequency of ectoparasites belonged to mites (50.44%) and lice (14.04%), respectively. The results suggested that the prevalence of ectoparasites could be influenced by rodent host species. Monitoring the rodent population and their ectoparasites is recommended to facilitate arthropod-borne disease control programs. (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease)

Free-radical scavenging activity and bioactive secondary metabolites from various extracts of Glinus oppositifolius (L.) Aug. DC. (Molluginaceae) roots, stems and leaves
Conclusions This paper has reported for the first time the antioxidant activity of the different parts of G. oppositifolius, i.e. roots and stems. The results demonstrate great potential of the plant as a new source of food supplements, drug components and other materials or ingredients for health and wellness. Antidermatophytic activity of miconazole nanoformulation against Trichophyton rubrum
Conclusions Proniosomal preparation resulted in better permeation of the miconazole nitrate and there was a constant increase in zone of inhibition with increase in drug concentration. This study proves antifungal potential of novel proniosomal preparation of miconazole nitrate against Trichophyton rubrum in the treatment of tinea infections. Incidence rate of hepatitis B infection in provinces of Iran
Conclusions Considering the large number of population at risk, hepatitis B prevention policies should focus on persons aged 20–49 years, with an emphasis on health education programs regarding the routes of exposure to HBV as well as vaccination of the high risk groups. Prevalence and risk factors of intestinal parasitic infections among hill tribe schoolchildren, Northern Thailand
Conclusions Drinking water contaminated by soil was shown to be an important risk factor for intestinal parasitic infection in hill tribe schoolchildren living in mountainous border areas in the northern part of Thailand. Safer alternative drinking water source should be provided along with health education for schools and villagers to be aware of the risk of intestinal parasites from drinking water sources such as mountain piped or underground wells. Such sources are likely to contain higher soil contents. (Source: Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease)

Characterization of drug resistance mutations in ART-naïve HIV-1 infected children in Northern Vietnam
Conclusions This is the first study reporting the prevalence of drug resistance-associated mutation in naïve HIV-1 infected children in Northern Vietnam. These data also emphasize the importance of genotypic resistance testing of HIV-1 infected children before initiating treatment in order to achieve better clinical outcome. Physician perceptions of HIV cure in China: A mixed methods review and implications for HIV cure research
Publication date: September 2015 Source:Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease, Volume 5, Issue 9 Author(s): Zachary Clarke Rich, Chuncheng Liu, Qingyan Ma, Fengyu Hu, Weiping Cai, Xiaoping Tang, Joseph David Tucker There are over 100 clinical trials worldwide focused on developing an HIV cure. Research participants will assume substantial individual risks while receiving little or no individual benefit. Physicians will have important dual roles of leading HIV cure research studies and guiding patient expectations. Many low and middle-income nations have started HIV cure trials, including China. The go...

An update on pathogenesis and management of tuberculosis with special reference to drug resistance
Publication date: September 2015 Source:Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Disease, Volume 5, Issue 9 Author(s): Sujay Kumar Bhunia, Mrinmoy Sarkar, Asesh Banerjee, Biplab Giri Drug resistance in tuberculosis (TB) is a global problem and both developed as well as under developed parts of the world are predisposed to drug resistant TB. Multiple drug resistant–TB (MDR-TB) designates the very strain of the pathogen which is resistant to at least two primary anti-TB drugs isoniazid and rifampicin. This strain after acquiring a further bacillary resistance to any second line injectable drug and any of the fluoroqui...

Measles and respiratory failure: Case report and review of the last European outbreaks
We present the last 2 cases with severe measles-associated respiratory failure and a review of the literature of the last European outbreaks. Two young adults were admitted in the intensive care unit due to respiratory failure with a confirmed measles infection. Both treated with high flow nasal cannula during 3 to 5 days; one had a pneumococcal pneumonia co-infection. An incomplete vaccination schedule was documented in one of them while the other did not remember his. Within 10 days of admission, both were discharged from intensive care unit and the hospital with no complications. Measles can present with a variety of sy...

Cerebral toxoplasmosis in a patient leads to diagnosis of AIDS
We report on the case of a 36–year–old man admitted to MadaniHospital with Imbalance and loss of consciousness. He has been suffering headache, impaired speech and inability to walk since two weeks ago. In magnetic resonance imaging multiple space occupying lesions in bilateral cerebral hemispheres with ring enhancement after contrast injection were seen. HIV test for HIV-1 was reactive, Toxoplasma serology was revealed raised immunoglobulin G antibody levels of 650 IU/mL. Cerebral toxoplasmosis in this patient leads to diagnosis of HIV infection at advanced stage. The patient treated successfully with alternative drug...

Prevalence of pathogenicity island markers genes in uropathogenic Escherichia coli isolated from patients with urinary tract infectious
Conclusions Pathogenicity island markers cause horizontal transfer of genes. Many virulence genes are present in the pathogenicity islands regions in such a way that by deletion and/or mutation of these genes, the bacteria would lose its pathogenicity. Knowledge of the molecular details of uropathogenic E. coli is useful to develop successful strategies for the treatment of urinary tract infection and complications associated with urinary tract infections in human.
