Posterior urethral valves in fraternal twins: case report and review of the literature
We report a pair of dizygotic twins with type 1 posterior urethral valves. Concomitant and discordant presentation of posterior urethral valves in twins is rare, with a handful of cases in the literature. The occurrence of identical pathology in dizygotic twins probably suggests the possibility of an inherited trait as it does exist in monozygotic twins. (Source: Annals of Pediatric Surgery)

Infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis in monozygotic twins: a case report and review of genetic and modifiable risk factors
Infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis is the most common surgical pathology resulting in emesis presenting in infancy and is usually encountered between the second and eighth weeks of life. It is the most common indication for surgery in infants less than 1 month of age. Prior to the pyloromyotomy developed by Ramstedt in 1911, the mortality for the condition exceeded 50%. Current epidemiologic data indicate that the ailment affects between two and five infants per 1000 live births. Despite the incidence of the condition, the etiologic factors, genetic or environmental, have yet to be clearly elucidated. The incidence in...

Predicting surgical outcome of pediatric percutaneous nephrolithotomy
Purpose The aim was to evaluate the outcome of pediatric percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) guided by Guy’s stone score grading system. Patients and methods This was a prospective study of children with renal calculi more than 2 cm. They were younger than 18 years and were a candidate for PCNL at our University Hospitals from January 2013 until July 2016. All of them had a low-dose noncontrast enhanced computed tomography. The procedure was performed under general anesthesia with the patients in the prone position guided by fluoroscopy. The stone-free rate and the presence and type of complications were estimated...

Upper lip myomucosal flap for the repair of anterior oronasal fistula
This study included 10 patients with age ranging from 15 to 72 months. The size of the fistula was less than 1 cm in six patients and more than 1 cm in four patients. The flap was used as an additional layer repair in seven patients and as the only layer for the repair in three patients. This technique was found to be successful in 70% of the patients with good healing without any recurrent fistula. We concluded that the use of this technique is feasible; however, its efficacy should be tested in larger number of patients to be considered as an option for the treatment of anterior oronasal fistula. Medical conditions mimicking the acute surgical abdomen in children
Conclusion Although eight patients with negative laparotomy result constitute only 0.5% of all the surgeries and 2.7% of all the laparotomies, it still forms the bulk (i.e. 8/16=50%) of the patients with underlying medical cause of the surgical abdomen. There were two deaths, representing a mortality of 12.5% (2/16=12.5%), with one in the operated group and one in the nonoperated group. This is why we want to stress the importance of caution and sound clinical judgement in evaluating this subset of patients. (Source: Annals of Pediatric Surgery)
