Preterm with appendicular abscess and subcapsular liver haematoma: an unreported association
We present an unreported association of these two serious conditions in a preterm infant with appendicular abscess and subcapsular liver haematoma. She presented with sepsis, enlarged liver and tender right iliac fossa mass. Laparotomy was performed for possible complicated NEC. Intraoperatively, there was an appendicular abscess with a small subcapsular liver haematoma and no evidence of NEC. Appendectomy and peritoneal toilet were performed. She had a stormy postoperative period due to sepsis, thrombocytopaenia and expansion of her liver haematoma. The pathology of her appendix was in keeping with appendicitis, with no e...

Dealing with the hugely ectatic duodenum in high jejunal atresias
High jejunal atresias may be associated with ectasia of the duodenum and dysmotility, which can delay inception of feedings and inanition. The procedures used for ectatic jejunum cannot be applied to the duodenum because of its complex anatomy. Dealing with the problem does not find mention in the major text books. Detailed here is a baby operated for jejunal atresia in which the ectatic duodenum led to prolonged, high postoperative aspirates, which precluded feeds. The successful operative management of the dilated duodenum is described below. (Source: Annals of Pediatric Surgery)

Use of hyaluronic acid-derived dermal substitute for skin reconstruction in giant omphalocele
The management of neonates with giant omphalocele remains a challenging endeavor. Multiple management strategies have been devised and several repair techniques have been described. However, no single procedure can be considered a standard. Among silo, skin flap, and primary closure, none have been successful in treating all patients. Here we present two cases in which we used Hyalomatrix to prepare for skin grafting to repair giant omphaloceles. (Source: Annals of Pediatric Surgery)

The mysterious pleural effusion
We report the case of a 6-month-old infant on total parenteral nutrition since neonatal period, as a consequence of severe intestinal insufficiency secondary to extensive intestinal resection for necrotizing enterocolitis. The child was admitted to the ICU with respiratory failure due to bilateral milky pleural effusion 17 days after placement of a left internal saphenous line. Pleural effusion analysis was suggestive of chylothorax, with high triglyceride (722 mg/dl) and low cholesterol ( (Source: Annals of Pediatric Surgery)

Work type II first branchial cleft cyst: a rare anomaly with a classical presentation
We report a case of a patient with the classical presentation of a Work type II branchial cleft cyst. Imaging showed a lesion just adjacent to the external auditory canal. Intraoperatively, a cartilage-lined blind-ending sac with hair-bearing contents duplicating the external auditory canal was found. The case highlights the need to consider the diagnosis of first branchial cleft anomaly especially in the presence of cysts and sinuses within the region of the parotid and the upper neck. Complete surgical excision would be the mainstay of treatment to prevent future recurrence. (Source: Annals of Pediatric Surgery)

Catheter-induced brachial artery thrombosis in the neonate
We present a case of a premature male neonate who suffered complete thrombosis of the brachial artery following multiple failed attempts at cannulation. He subsequently underwent emergent thrombectomy, resection of the involved vessel segment, and primary microanastomosis with good recovery. (Source: Annals of Pediatric Surgery)

Sacrococcygeal teratoma: management and outcomes
ConclusionAwareness about this pathology among practitioners is essential and would have avoided complications in this series. Early diagnosis and complete excision with removal of the coccyx is associated with good prognosis. Recurrence is related to tumor spillage during excision. Long-term lower gastrointestinal problems (constipation, fecal soiling) correlate with Altman’s classification of the tumor. (Source: Annals of Pediatric Surgery)

Outcome of patients with anorectal malformations after posterior sagittal anorectoplasty: a study from Ahvaz, Iran
ConclusionThere was no significant difference in the outcome after PSARP between boys and girls. There was no significant difference between low-type and high-type ARM. The mean of score was significantly higher among patients with fistula than among patients without fistula. (Source: Annals of Pediatric Surgery)
