Social Media And The Future Of Meetings
Social Media Has Changed Meetings Forever This summer it was my honor to be part of a main-stage panel celebrating the 40th anniversary of the National Speakers Association.  The conversation turned to the future of the speaking profession and meetings industry. The landscape of national meetings, association meetings, and corporate events is shifting and both groups (speakers and meeting professionals) must face new challenges.  Social media has changed the nature of meetings.  Speakers and meeting professionals must embrace technology and understand the needs of a new – more connected – audience. It is no ...

Use Your Resources Wisely
The Girl Scout Law and Wellness Eliz had the honor of presenting a wellness program to Girl Scout Leaders during a leadership training retreat. She designed a wellness program based on the Girl Scout Law. What can the Girl Scout Law tell us about wellness? Quite a bit. One line of the law is: Use Resources Wisely Eliz asked the leaders to consider if they were using their OWN resources wisely in a series of questions including: How often… Do you forgo personal pleasures to get one more thing done? Do you grab what is handy instead of making a healthy meal? Do you wish there were more hours in the day so you could ge...

Are You Kidding? A Rant About Wellness Messaging
Please excuse me – I need to rant. September often brings the roll-out of new workplace wellness efforts.  Believe me, I am all for creating an environment to support healthy employees.  Today a reader sent this picture: You don’t have to be better than everybody else. You just have to be better than you have ever been. Are You Kidding? The goal of wellness message should be to encourage healthy behavior.  This one made the reader angry.  Me too! Better than I’ve ever been?  All it motivates me to do is scream, “Screw it! (or something more Erica Napoletano – esque) Why should I even try?” Is th...

What Is Atrial Fibrillation?
Atrial Fibrillation is the most common abnormal heart rhythm. More than 5.1 million Americans are living with Atrial Fibrillation (Afib). As the Baby Boomers age, these numbers will increase and are expected to reach nearly 16 million by 2050.  September is Afib awareness month, take a few moments to learn about the symptoms and risk factors and be kind to your heart. Symptoms of Afib vary from patient to patient. Some people feel as if the heart will jump out of the chest, others have no symptoms at all. Patients describe symptoms feeling like: The heart skipping beats. Racing or thudding of the heart. Erratic heart bea...

Tips For A Healthy Convention
Today I am traveling to the annual convention for the National Speakers Convention.  This four day event is the highlight of my professional year and I can’t wait to reconnect with my fellow members and get new ideas to build my business.  Four days in a hotel and six days on the road can throw a wrench into my healthy habits.  Over the past few years I’ve developed some strategies to stay healthy on the road. Tips for a Healthy Convention or Meeting: Stalk The Halls: Three 10-minute walks during the day can be as beneficial as a 30-minute walk.  Walk from your room to the meeting area – and take a v...

Run Your Own Race
Ever Wonder Why Everyone Else Seems Farther Ahead? Summer is finally here, and so is sailing season.  While most of the time sailing is a stress reducing activity for me, Friday night racing tends to get my pulse rate up! Some of that stress and anxiety is good.  There is a benefit to working hard physically and mentally in challenging situations.  What isn’t healthy, however, is the constant comparison with the other boats around us. Sailboat racing is handicapped, so, in theory, our rather heavy cruising boat should score competitively with the fancy racing boats.  In theory. My husband and I race with just our...

Say Yes To Fun
When was the last time you said “YES” to something just because it is fun? In the fast-paced, high-stress world of adulthood, it is important to periodically take a break for fun. It is the final full week of school this week and at 8:45 am the text from our elementary music teacher came: Opera Kickball. 9:00.  Bring coffee! Opera Kickball is something special she does for the 4th graders each year.  The kids get to go outside, be silly, and run around.  Sounds like fun, right.  She and I are the “Divas” and the children must bow whenever we step onto the kickball field.  Extra points are award...

The Curse Of Capability
Help! There Is Too Much To Do! Feeling overwhelmed? Don’t worry you are not alone.  Many of us struggle with what I describe as The Curse Of Capability.  Are you suffering with the curse? Do people often rely on your ability to get things done? Do you have the uncanny knack for pulling things off, even in tight time frames? Do you constantly worry something will slip through the cracks? Do you often find yourself thinking about all of the things you didn’t get done, rather than enjoying those you completed? These are sure signs! When you are considered a capable person, you are asked to take on more, which...

Bulk Up Your Breakfast
Spring is finally here and Summer is just around the corner! Are your Summer clothes motivating you to think about what you eat? Most of us tend to gain a bit of weight over the winter months.  Between the weather preventing outside activities, bulky clothing, and colder temperatures, it is easy to slip into less than healthy habits. Now that warmer temperatures are here, take a step towards good health by bulking up your breakfast.  Many people try to cut calories by skipping breakfast, but this often leads to weight gain or plateauing.  The trick is to accelerate your metabolism to burn more calories. One of the healt...

What Are Your Three?
What Are Your Top Three Priorities? A key element of my program Juggling Stress: A Busy Woman’s Guide to Sanity and Health is naming and focusing on the three most important things in your life.  Understanding your priorities and evaluating decisions based on those priorities is essential to managing stress and maintaining your health. We are all asked to juggle new things every day.  Some times they are small, but even when the task is small, it may derail your commitment to what is truly important. In my world, my focus is on: My Family My Business My Health Each new opportunity is evaluated on whether it suppo...
