Childhood Obesity: Heart And Liver Disease In Fast Forward
Nearly ten percent of American children have chronic liver disease caused by inappropriate storage of fat in the liver.  Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) speeds the development of heart disease by raising blood pressure.  NAFLD is often undetected until heart and liver damage has already begun.  Understanding the connection between childhood obesity and the increased risk of heart and liver disease is crucial in preventing early onset and death. 11 “Real” Tips for a Heart Healthy Thanksgiving
Okay, so let’s get real about Thanksgiving and trying to maintain your heart healthy habits.  Thanksgiving is a celebration built around food.  Which, in itself, isn’t a problem, but that celebration has morphed into a non-stop parade of overindulgence. That is a problem. A turkey dinner doesn’t have to derail your healthy eating habits.  Spending time with family doesn’t have to be stressful.  But, often both are true.  This year, instead of tips about substituting chicken broth for butter in the mashed potatoes, let’s get real about how to navigate Thanksgiving with your self respect, sanity, and belt in t...

The Gift Of Silence
Silence is more than golden.  It is heart healthy! Recently my daughter had minor foot surgery.  Even though it was a minor procedure, she was rather anxious.  Which, of course, is understandable. Something interesting happened in the waiting room. We arrived early to fill out the paperwork, and ended up with an extra 15 minutes to fill.  My daughter brought a book to read, and we were also chatting.  In the waiting room, however, was a television, tuned to a 24-hour news channel.  Several years ago our whole family stopped watching television news.  The sensationalized version of daily events creates too much stres...

Not Done Yet: Women’s Heart Health Mission
A ride in an ambulance, and back in time… A few months ago I had a health scare.  At a meeting of professional speakers in Chicago, my heart rate suddenly skyrocketed and I couldn’t get it under control.  As a heart attack survivor with a surgically repaired heart, I know an arrhythmia, or abnormal heart rhythm, could develop over time, but the fast thumping in my chest was scary. The dizziness and discomfort became so intense, we called 911. (To be honest, I tried very hard to avoid the excitement of calling the ambulance, but I was worried I would pass out in my friend’s car on the way to the hospital.) I have no...

Healthy Meeting Tips
Get Up! Tips for a healthy and productive meeting, conference, or convention Recently, I had the honor of presenting a session at the National Speakers Association Convention about healthy meeting strategies.  Here is the companion article for the session: A multiple day conference can undo the good work of healthy habits.  Four hours of sitting increases triglyceride levels, raises blood pressure, deters blood flow, and slows thinking. Taking steps to protect your health as a participant is important.  As a presenter, using movement within the program can support audience engagement, learning, and health. Event organiz...

Work Life Balance Takes Work
She Makes It Look So Easy Ever look at someone else and think, “She’s got it all together. Must be nice,” and feel like your work life balance doesn’t measure up? We all do it. Recently I was asked to write a Work Life Balance article for Speaker Magazine (a publication from the National Speakers Association).  While honored, I struggled a bit with writing it.  So many articles on the topic of balance or wellness make it seem simple… Just do a few things on a list and BINGO you achieve balance.  That isn’t my experience, and I don’t think I’m alone. Which is why my article...

Your Environment Matters
Who Surrounds You? There is a familiar quotation from the legendary author and speaker Jim Rohn, had a famous saying: You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Think about it.  Who do you spend most of your time with – day in and day out?  Are those people supportive of your goals?  My good friend Thom Singer wrote an excellent post today about the importance of connecting with people to lift you up. He writes: Mr. Rohn was right.  If you are engulfed by self-doubt, limiting beliefs, and negativity, it can be a result of the input you are receiving from others.  The reverse is true too...

The Real Breakfast of Champions
Start The Day The Right Way! The American Heart Association shared this excellent breakfast parfait recipe (see below).  Starting the day with a delicious and nutritious breakfast can make your day happier and healthier.   A good breakfast combines protein, complex carbohydrates, and a little healthy fat keeps hunger at bay and fuels your body for the morning.  Skipping breakfast, as I mention in this article on Answers.com, can increase your risk of heart disease.  In addition, consistent timing of meals is important in maintaining a healthy metabolism. Going too long without food puts stress on the body and creates ...
