Having A Cold Is Like Being Drunk
Colds can impair thinking as much as alcohol!   This week I’ve been struggling with a cold. Not only am I coughing and sneezing, I’m feeling fuzzy, and frankly a little stupid. Turns out there is a good reason for that! In a recent study released by Cardiff University in Wales, Dr. Andrew Smith discovered people suffering with the cold virus were less alert, had more negative moods, and more sluggish thinking. Even more concerning was that those with colds had slower reaction times, were slower in learning new information and in completing tasks. Turns out it’s not my imagination. I am more stupid when I have a...

Celebrating 10 Years of Women's Heart Advocacy
Time Flies When You Are Doing Good! Ten years ago if a woman went to the ER with symptoms of a heart attack, she was likely to be sent home after being told it was anxiety, gas, or “all in her head.” Today, through the efforts of the Heart Truth Campaign through the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and Go Red for Women through the American Heart Association, women are more likely to receive the care they need! It has been my honor to travel the country speaking at more Go Red, Heart Truth, and women’s wellness events than I can count over the years.  We’ve accomplished so much in the past ...

Seriously, Just Get The Flu Shot
Did you get your flu shot yet? Our family was a bit delayed in getting our shots this year and sure enough – yep, one of the girls got it! Watching my very healthy 12-year-old struggle with a high fever and crazy coughing was tough.  I can’t imagine the toll it would take on someone who isn’t as healthy. The rest of us rushed out and got our flu shots.  So far, (do you hear me knocking on wood?) none of the rest of us have fallen ill. I know – no one likes a shot. Yet, a little poke in the arm is a small price to pay to avoid a potentially fatal infection. Many people are confused about the flu an...

That Picture on the Fridge Won't Help!
Think taping a photo of a skinny person to the fridge will help you lose weight? It won’t! In a wonderful interview on NPR this morning, Anne Klesse, a researcher at Tilburg University in the Netherlands described her study. Two groups of women interested in losing weight were given food journals to record everything they ate – an excellent weight loss strategy.  One group received journals with a picture of a tape measure on the cover and on each page.  The second group received journals with a picture of a skinny model on the cover and on each page. What do you think happened? The first group was successful...

Resolve Not To Resolve in 2013
No more failed New Year’s Resolutions! Make a daily goal instead. How many times have you resolved to lose weight, exercise more, or eat better on New Year’s Day only to beat yourself up later for failing?  Resolutions are often too large and too vague to be effective.  This year do something different. This year make a small, simple daily goal instead of a resolution! Think about it. What if you simply decided to take a walk every day, or eat a healthy breakfast, or drink one less soda?  Just one small thing you could do every day to improve your health – it could make a large difference over the cour...

How to Cope When the World Seems Too Scary
How do you cope with fear? Events in Newtown, CT last week brought back an unwelcome emotion: fear.  My sense of denial, the thing all of us need to get up and leave the house everyday was damaged when I had a massive heart attack at age 35 while pregnant with twins.  In a matter of minutes, my world view changed.  The world was no longer safe.  I knew for certain bad things happen and suddenly the world was too scary. For months I had to daily talk myself into going out the door, living life despite my fear, I was pretty good at it, but felt alone in the struggle. Then came September 11, 2001, and the world became sca...

Exercise for the Non-Exerciser
Are you a Non-exerciser, like me? Recently, a quiz from Everyday Health on Exercise Personalities pegged me as a “Non-Exerciser”. What!? At first horrified, I quickly came to realize it makes sense.  I don’t really like exercising and do it because it is important to my health. Most of my fitness advice centers fitting more activity into your already busy day.  Are you a Non-Exerciser too? Think about it: Do you find it difficult to fit exercise into your already busy day? Do you look for ways to be healthy AND get everything done? Good news! Being more active really means just moving your bootie more every ...
