That Picture on the Fridge Won’t Help!

Think taping a photo of a skinny person to the fridge will help you lose weight? It won’t! In a wonderful interview on NPR this morning, Anne Klesse, a researcher at Tilburg University in the Netherlands described her study. Two groups of women interested in losing weight were given food journals to record everything they ate – an excellent weight loss strategy.  One group received journals with a picture of a tape measure on the cover and on each page.  The second group received journals with a picture of a skinny model on the cover and on each page. What do you think happened? The first group was successful in losing weight. The second group was not, and in fact many showed a slight weight gain. What should you take from this? Set realistic goals, surround yourself with encouraging people and images. If you feel like you’ll never attain that “skinny model” look it is easy to just give up. The goal is a healthier you – a happier you – not some airbrushed image from the media. Be kind to yourself.  Eat well. Move your bootie. Smile more.
