How Does A Negative Work Environment Create Job Stress?
Does a crabby co-worker or an overly demanding boss increase stress? Absolutely. According to my job stress research, the environment at work is the 3rd leading cause of stress.  This makes sense for a couple of reasons: First, stress is contagious. Sitting next to a highly stressed person increases your stress.  A recent study indicates this second-hand stress reaction may be hard-wired.  Chemicals released in one body due to stress signal the rest of the group of danger.  This reaction comes in handy if we all need to escape a burning building, but isn’t helpful when it leads to burn-out.  This second-hand nat...

Did you make a New Years Resolution? Did you set a first-quarter goal? Are setbacks impeding your progress toward success? So often when we make a goal we make it so big, it’s hard to accomplish all in one try.    Doing a Rube Goldberg project with my daughter recently reminded me of three strategies for success in making a change or completing a project.  A Rube Goldberg project is making a series of complicated steps to do something simple.  In our case, it was putting a tea bag into a cup.   Throughout the project, we needed to be persistent and look at failures as setbacks rather than reasons to quit. Here...

No, wine isn ’t better than exercise
Did you see the news today reporting wine is better for you than exercise? Me too. Here is the thing: That’s not what the study says. The truth is that older people who drink moderately statistically live longer than non-drinkers. They are 18% less likely to die prematurely. People who exercise 15 to 45 minutes per day are 11% less likely to die prematurely than non-exercisers. That doesn’t mean you should stop exercising and start drinking. Boiling medical research down to sound bites often gives people the permission to avoid the work of protecting their health. Exercise is essential to good health, and a high qualit...

Why Do Stress Management Programs Fail?
Are we trying to solve the wrong problem? Work-Life Balance is one of my most requested speaking topics. Can I admit something? I hate the concept of Work-life Balance. Here are a few reasons why: First, Work-life Balance assumes that work and life exist separately from each other and if we just could keep one from interfering with the other everything would be great.  It also assumes one can offset the other, life is stress free and work is stressful.  Does that make sense? No. In the research I’ve conducted on job stress, fewer than ten percent of the more than 1000 people participating rated issues relating to work ...
