Serum interleukin-23 level in rheumatoid arthritis patients: Relation to disease activity and severity
ConclusionIL-23 could be a useful marker for disease activity in RA. Its correlation with RASS suggested that IL-23 might be a therapeutic target for prevention of disability. (Source: The Egyptian Rheumatologist)

Clinical significance of aortic stiffness, carotid intima-media thickness and serum osteoprotegerin level in rheumatoid arthritis patients
ConclusionRA is an independent risk factor associated with cardiovascular events. For determining this risk, measuring the serum OPG, CIMT and aortic stiffness may be a useful guide. (Source: The Egyptian Rheumatologist)

The effectiveness of etanercept and adalimumab on anemia of chronic disease and serum hepcidin in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, a comparative study
ConclusionsTreatment with etanercept or adalimumab plus MTX significantly improved ACD in RA patients without significant differences between them. Serum hepcidin is a potential indicator for anemia of chronic disease and disease activity in RA patients. (Source: The Egyptian Rheumatologist)

Serum serotonin in rheumatoid arthritis patients: Relation to rheumatoid factor positivity, clinical manifestations and fibromyalgia
ConclusionSerum serotonin level was high in RA, especially in seropositive patients. It demonstrated central antidepressant and peripheral pro-inflammatory role. The SSRI could be of benefit only in RA with FMS. (Source: The Egyptian Rheumatologist)

Ultrasonographic evaluation of haemodynamic flow changes to the hip in systemic lupus erythematosus patients: Correlation with risk factors for osteonecrosis
ConclusionThe presence of associated risk factors for ON contributes to haemodynamic flow changes. Color Doppler ultrasound represents a useful tool for the assessment and follow-up for haemodynamic deterioration of hip vascularity in both hip joints. (Source: The Egyptian Rheumatologist)

Quality of life in fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis patients: Comparison of different scales
ConclusionsRA patients had worse QoL than FMS and OA according to PCS and MCS. SF-12 and SF-6D can be used instead of SF-36 or WHOQoL Brief scales for faster results. (Source: The Egyptian Rheumatologist)

Erythrocyte and glomerular C4d deposits as a biomarker for active lupus nephritis
ConclusionErythrocytic C4d correlated significantly with the LN activity which might serve as a potential biomarker for renal activity in the future instead of biopsy and may further help in the optimum follow up of LN patients. (Source: The Egyptian Rheumatologist)

An unusual case of intestinal pseudo-obstruction presenting in an adolescent with juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus: A diagnostic challenge
ConclusionIntestinal pseudo-obstruction is an unusual clinical manifestation of SLE and may represent a diagnostic challenge. We underscore the importance of a prompt and precise recognition of this condition, which is likely to have a positive impact on clinical outcomes. IpsO is caused by a non-mechanical obstructive bowel injury. Evidence points towards to the use of IgG and steroid for five days as the mainstay of therapy for patients with IpsO.
