Cannabis acute use impacts symptoms and functionality in a cohort of antipsychotic naïve First Episode of Psychosis individuals
DiscussionThe acute use of cannabis influenced the clinical presentation at our FEP baseline assessment, but did not to influence symptoms or functional outcomes at 10-week follow-up. Additionally, acute cannabis users had a better response for excitement and positive symptoms. Higher excitement symptoms at presentation of FEP should raise concerns of possible acute use of cannabis. Longer follow-up times may elucidate whether the effects on functionality would be more evident later in disease development. (Source: Schizophrenia Research: Cognition)

From “under” to “over” social cognition in schizophrenia: Is there distinct profiles of impairments according to negative and positive symptoms?
Publication date: March 2019Source: Schizophrenia Research: Cognition, Volume 15Author(s): Elodie Peyroux, Zelda Prost, Charlotte Danset-Alexandre, Lindsay Brenugat-Herne, Isabelle Carteau-Martin, Baptiste Gaudelus, Célia Jantac, David Attali, Isabelle Amado, Jérôme Graux, Emmanuelle Houy-Durand, Julien Plasse, Nicolas FranckAbstractInteractions between social cognition and symptoms of schizophrenia have been investigated, but mostly component by component. Here we tested the assumption that two categories of deficits exist depending on clinical profiles, one corresponding to a defect in social cognition – “under-so...

Cognition in schizophrenia improves with treatment of severe obstructive sleep apnoea: A pilot study
Publication date: March 2019Source: Schizophrenia Research: Cognition, Volume 15Author(s): Hannah Myles, Nicholas Myles, Ching Li Chai Coetzer, Robert Adams, Madhu Chandratilleke, Dennis Liu, Jeremy Mercer, Andrew Vakulin, Andrew Vincent, Gary Wittert, Cherrie GalletlyAbstractPrevious studies have shown that people with schizophrenia have high rates of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). Despite this, intervention studies to treat OSA in this population have not been undertaken. The ASSET (Assessing Sleep in Schizophrenia and Evaluating Treatment) pilot study investigated Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) treatment of...

Association between lower estimated premorbid intelligence quotient and smoking behavior in patients with schizophrenia
ConclusionOur results suggest that lower estimated premorbid intelligence quotient is an important variable in elucidating smoking behavior in humans and may be associated with higher prevalence of smoking in patients with schizophrenia. (Source: Schizophrenia Research: Cognition)

The impact of schizophrenia and intelligence on the relationship between age and brain volume
This study points to effects of schizophrenia on GM early in the illness, before antipsychotic treatment is initiated, suggesting that WM changes may occur later in the disease process. (Source: Schizophrenia Research: Cognition)

Social functioning impairments in schizotypy when social cognition and neurocognition are not impaired
Publication date: December 2018Source: Schizophrenia Research: Cognition, Volume 14Author(s): Maral Aghvinian, Mark J. SergiAbstractThe present study examined the social, cognitive, and emotional functioning of persons with schizotypy. Over 2000 undergraduate students were screened for schizotypy with the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire – Brief over two consecutive semesters. Ninety-two persons with high schizotypy and 22 persons with low schizotypy completed measures of social functioning (Social Adjustment Scale, Social Functioning Scale, MOS Social Support Survey), working memory (Paced Auditory Serial Addition ...

Psychiatric symptoms and related dysfunction in a general population sample
ConclusionsThe results are consistent with the continuum view of the etiology of psychiatric disorders in which psychiatric disorders are dimensional and experienced in varying degrees of severity across the general and clinical population. Importantly, the results highlight the potential impact of psychiatric symptomatology on functional outcomes in the population. (Source: Schizophrenia Research: Cognition)

Positive symptoms and time perception in schizophrenia: A meta-analysis
Publication date: September 2018Source: Schizophrenia Research: Cognition, Volume 13Author(s): Natsuki Ueda, Kazushi Maruo, Tomiki SumiyoshiAbstractPositive symptoms of schizophrenia may be related to distortions in time perception. To examine this issue, we conducted a meta-analysis to determine whether positive symptoms are associated with deficits in time processing performance. MEDLINE and Web of Science were searched from January 1980 through March 2017, and all related articles and their references were scrutinized to find relevant studies. Studies were selected if they included participants with a diagnosis of schiz...

Model selection and prediction of outcomes in recent onset schizophrenia patients who undergo cognitive training
Publication date: March 2018Source: Schizophrenia Research: Cognition, Volume 11Author(s): Ian S. Ramsay, Sisi Ma, Melissa Fisher, Rachel L. Loewy, J. Daniel Ragland, Tara Niendam, Cameron S. Carter, Sophia VinogradovAbstractPredicting treatment outcomes in psychiatric populations remains a challenge, but is increasingly important in the pursuit of personalized medicine. Patients with schizophrenia have deficits in cognition, and targeted cognitive training (TCT) of auditory processing and working memory has been shown to improve some of these impairments; but little is known about the baseline patient characteristics pred...

The influence of schizotypal traits on attention under high perceptual load
This article considers whether perceptual resource limitations play a role in moderating attentional abnormalities in SSD. According to perceptual load theory, perceptual resource limitations can lead to attenuated or superior performance on dual-task paradigms depending on whether participants are required to process, or attempt to ignore, secondary stimuli. If SSD is associated with perceptual resource limitations, and if it represents the extreme end of an otherwise normally distributed neuropsychological phenotype, schizotypal traits in the general population should lead to disproportionate performance costs on dual-ta...

Diminished Hedonic response in neuroleptic-free youth at ultra high-risk for psychosis
In this study, we examined neurophysiological and self-reported response to emotional stimuli in UHR (n = 23) and healthy control (CN: n = 30) participants who passively viewed pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral images for 500 ms while the electroencephalogram was recorded and then provided self-reports of valence and arousal to the stimuli. The Late Positive Potential (LPP) event related potential (ERP) component was used as a neurophysiological marker of emotional reactivity. Results indicated that CN participants had higher LPP amplitude for pleasant and unpleasant compared to neutral stimuli; ho...

Polygenic signal for symptom dimensions and cognitive performance in patients with chronic schizophrenia
Publication date: June 2018Source: Schizophrenia Research: Cognition, Volume 12Author(s): Rose Mary Xavier, Jennifer R. Dungan, Richard S.E. Keefe, Allison VorderstrasseAbstractGenetic etiology of psychopathology symptoms and cognitive performance in schizophrenia is supported by candidate gene and polygenic risk score (PRS) association studies. Such associations are reported to be dependent on several factors - sample characteristics, illness phase, illness severity etc. We aimed to examine if schizophrenia PRS predicted psychopathology symptoms and cognitive performance in patients with chronic schizophrenia. We also exa...
