Interleukin-1β and prostaglandin-synthesizing enzymes as modulators of human omental and subcutaneous adipose tissue function
Publication date: Available online 29 November 2018Source: Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty AcidsAuthor(s): Jennifer Labrecque, Andréanne Michaud, Marie-Frédérique Gauthier, Mélissa Pelletier, François Julien, Léonie Bouvet-Bouchard, André TchernofAbstractIL-1β stimulates expression of prostaglandin (PG)-synthesizing enzymes cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and aldo-keto reductase (AKR)1B1 in human preadipocytes. We aimed to examine the impact of IL-1β, COX-2 and AKR1B1 on markers of human visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue function, and to assess whether PG synthesis by these enzymes mediates IL-1β e...

The omega-3 index in patients with heart failure: a prospective cohort study
Conclusions: Our results show a marked depletion of omega-3 fatty acids in patients hospitalized for decompensated heart failure (suggested target range 8-11%). Although the O3-I was associated with a panel of established risk indicators in heart failure, it did not predict mortality risk.Clinical Trial Registration: www.controlled-trials.com; ISRCTN23325295 (Source: Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids (PLEFA))

Palmitic acid methyl ester is a novel neuroprotective agent against cardiac arrest
Publication date: Available online 23 November 2018Source: Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty AcidsAuthor(s): Reggie Hui-Chao Lee, Alexandre Couto e Silva, HarLee E. Possoit, Francesca M. Lerner, Po-Yi Chen, Rinata Azizbayeva, Cristiane T. Citadin, Celeste Yin-Chieh Wu, Jake T. Neumann, Hung Wen LinAbstractWe previously discovered that palmitic acid methyl ester (PAME) is a potent vasodilator first identified and released from the superior cervical ganglion and remain understudied. Thus, we investigated PAME's role in modulating cerebral blood flow (CBF) and neuroprotection after 6 minutes of cardiac arrest (...

Very low inadequate dietary intakes of essential n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in pregnant and lactating French women: the INCA2 survey
ConclusionFrench pregnant and lactating women did not change their dietary habits to favor ALA and n-3 long-chain PUFA consumption via rich-ALA vegetable oils and fish and oily fish consumption, and have low n-3 PUFA dietary consumption typical of French women of childbearing age. Such PUFA intakes could have adverse impact on long-chain n-3 PUFA incorporation in brain membranes of fetus and infants, but also on cognitive and visual development of infants during the first years of life. Urinary 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α as a risk marker for the vulnerability of culprit plaque in diabetic patients with stable coronary artery disease
Publication date: Available online 22 November 2018Source: Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty AcidsAuthor(s): Gong Su, Tao Wang, Tao Zhang, Hong-Xia Yang, Shan-Shan Yu, Wen-Long Dai, Shu-Hua MiSummaryWe evaluated the association of urinary excretion of 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α (8-iso-PGF2α) with the vulnerability of culprit lesions in 156 age- and sex-matched diabetic stable coronary artery disease (CAD) patients with or without thin-capped fibroatheroma (TCFA) identified by iMAP intravascular ultrasound. Fasting urinary 8-iso-PGF2α level was measured and corrected by creatinine clearance. Compared to non-T...

Fatty Acids: Adiposity and Breast Cancer Chemotherapy, A bad synergy?
Publication date: Available online 22 November 2018Source: Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty AcidsAuthor(s): Ilze Mentoor, A-M Engelbrecht, Theo NellABSTRACTGlobally, breast cancer continues to be a major concern in women's health. Risk factors, specifically excess adipose tissue (adiposity), has reached epidemic proportions and has been identified as a major risk factor in the development of breast cancer.Dysfunctional adipose tissue has evoked research focusing on its association with metabolic-related conditions, breast cancer risk and progression. Adipose dysfunction in coordination with immune cells and...

Low omega-3 index and polyunsaturated fatty acid status in patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis
ConclusionThe low omega-3 index found in our CFS/ME patients may indicate increased risks for cardiovascular health, which should be further investigated. A low omega-3 index also suggests a pro-inflammatory state in these patients. Attempts should be made to increase the omega-3 index in CFS/ME patients, based on intervention trials assessing a potential therapeutic value. Antiemetic doses of dexamethasone and their effects on immune cell populations and plasma mediators of inflammation resolution in healthy volunteers
DiscussionThis is the first study in healthy volunteers to demonstrate that commonly employed antiemetic doses of dexamethasone affect immune cell populations and plasma levels of 17R-RvD1 an SPM with anti-nociceptive properties. If similar changes occur in surgical patients, then this may have implications for acute infection risk in the post-operative period. MatsuokaAbstractIn contrast to the cumulative evidence suggesting the inverse association of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) with depression, few studies have examined the association of n-6 PUFAs with depression. In particular, no study has examined the relationship between n-6 PUFAs and depression in cancer patients. Thus, we conducted t...
