Delayed hypoglycaemia in people with type 1 diabetes after performing moderate intensity exercise before the evening meal
Abstract For a person with type 1 diabetes, participation in exercise may increase the risk of hypoglycaemia. Research has been performed during or immediately after exercise in a laboratory environment, with limited evidence regarding strategies for post‐exercise hypoglycaemia prevention. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of delayed hypoglycaemia after 40 minutes of moderate intensity exercise at 70% VO2 max before the evening meal, in both the real‐life and laboratory exercise environments. Nine individuals (five males, four females) with type 1 diabetes using basal bolus analogue insulin regime...

New insulins for diabetes
Abstract Diabetes treatments have come a long way, but continual efforts are needed to make the disease easier to manage and more affordable. Nearly half a million patients in the UK are prescribed insulin; however, despite insulin's increasing use, current licensed insulin products incur significant barriers, which have fuelled the need to develop novel insulins and drug delivery methods. This review will critically consider the role of new insulin preparations and delivery methods, such as Technosphere insulin, buccal spray insulin, very‐long acting insulins, new insulin combinations, and ultra‐fast acting insulin th...

The design and evaluation of a self‐management algorithm for people with type 1 diabetes performing moderate intensity exercise
Abstract Limited evidence is available to advise people with type 1 diabetes about self‐management strategies for maintaining acceptable glycaemic control when exercising. A systematic review was conducted to design a self‐management algorithm for moderate intensity exercise. The effectiveness was investigated regarding the attainment of acceptable glucose concentrations during and after 40 minutes of exercise at 70% VO2 max in the real‐life environment. Nine individuals with type 1 diabetes (five male, four female) completed the study over a two‐week period. All used a basal bolus analogue insulin regimen and exer...

Patients’ perceptions of injecting insulin and self‐monitoring of blood glucose in the presence of others
In conclusion, patients across all ages, gender, diabetes type and diabetes duration report problems with injecting insulin and performing SMBG in front of others. The most common reason cited was ‘worried about upsetting or offending others’. Other reasons were ‘worried about what others may think of you’, and ‘do not want others to know that you have diabetes’. A public awareness campaign may help overcome some of these barriers. Gastrointestinal symptoms and pancreatic exocrine insufficiency in type 1 and type 2 diabetes
Abstract Our review of clinical practice demonstrates that gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms were common in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes seen within our diabetes service. In those patients who are symptomatic, we observed that 42% had low faecal elastase 1 levels consistent with the diagnosis of pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI). The presence of steatorrhoea and weight loss alone were insufficient to screen for PEI, and other GI symptoms (such as diarrhoea, abdominal cramps/pain and bloating) need to be additionally sought.
