Initiation of insulin adjustment for carbohydrate at onset of diabetes in children using a home‐based education programme with a bolus calculator
In conclusion, carbohydrate counting with the use of a bolus calculator blood glucose meter at diagnosis was successfully introduced to a home‐based education programme. This approach has improved glycaemic control in the first year of diagnosis, which may have a positive impact on long‐term glycaemic control. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons. GLP‐1 analogue use in patients with sub‐optimally controlled type 1 diabetes or obesity improves weight and HbA1c
In conclusion, the addition of a GLP‐1 analogue to existing treatment resulted in significantly improved glycaemic control and weight loss in patients with type 1 diabetes. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons. (Source: Practical Diabetes)

3 Dimensions of Care for Diabetes: integrating diabetes care into an individual's world
Abstract 3DFD (3 Dimensions of Care for Diabetes) is an award winning gold‐standard model of integrated care, which was developed and evaluated as a sustainable service for improving glycaemic control and reducing diabetes complications in South London's multi‐ethnic, socio‐economically disadvantaged and growing diabetes population. This service is fully integrated into the diabetes services across Lambeth and Southwark boroughs. It consists of a liaison psychiatrist who provides clinical leadership and psychiatric interventions, psychologists and two third‐sector social support workers who provide social care in t...

Being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes during adolescence. How do young people develop a healthy understanding of diabetes?
Abstract The aim of this study was to gain greater insight into the experience of being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes during adolescence, and the factors that influence how a young person makes sense of the condition over time. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was employed in an attempt to convey an understanding of what it feels like to be diagnosed with diabetes during adolescence and to highlight implications for health care professionals. The perspectives of eight adults, aged 28–36 years who were diagnosed with diabetes during adolescence, were gathered using an unstructured interview and were analyse...

Progressive and disabling lipoatrophy associated with insulin aspart via a continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion
We report a case of severe disfiguring lipoatrophy in an 18‐year‐old female patient following a change in the mode of administration of insulin aspart from subcutaneous injections to continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII). This case highlights the need for further research into the causes of insulin‐induced lipoatrophy and the need for caution when starting a patient on a CSII. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons. Diabetic retinopathy in patients who do not meet the diagnostic criteria for cystic fibrosis related diabetes
We report three patients with CF who were known to have abnormal glucose tolerance but did not meet the diagnostic criteria for CFRD. As the patients were commenced on insulin they were referred for annual diabetic complication screening and all were diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy. As these patients developed complications without being diagnosed with the causative disease, it questions the current diagnostic criteria for CFRD. This patient group also disproves the hypothesis that CFRD patients without fasting hyperglycaemia do not develop microvascular complications and suggests that, in some patients, such complicat...

Diabetes and ‘The Happiest Place on Earth’: safely attending an amusement park and riding roller coasters
Abstract People with type 1 diabetes need to be aware of the potential impact of rapidly changing physical forces that occur during a roller coaster ride and other environmental factors that can impact on an individual's efforts to maintain optimal glycaemic control during a visit to an amusement park. An individual's tolerance to accelerations experienced during a roller coaster ride can be influenced by many factors including age, outside temperature, anxiety, hypoxia, infections and also hypoglycaemia. Before visiting a park it would make sense to speak to the specialist team about riding roller coasters and to be prepa...

Development of a self‐management education module for those with type 2 diabetes on injectable therapies
Abstract The number of people using injectable therapies in the UK has dramatically increased over the last 20 years. People using insulin require intense support from health care professionals (HCPs). This paper describes a module which was developed for people with type 2 diabetes being treated with injectable therapies to empower them to effectively self‐manage their treatment. This was based on evidence from a previously published randomised controlled trial (the Microalbuminuria Education and Medication Optimisation [MEMO] study). Groups of up to 10 participants (with partners) are invited to attend a core session (...
