Analyzing edge detection techniques for feature extraction in dental radiographs
Publication date: Available online 6 May 2016 Source:Perspectives in Science Author(s): Kanika Lakhani, Bhawna Minocha, Neeraj Gugnani Several Dental problems can be detected using radiographs but the main issue with radiographs is that they are not very prominent. In this paper, two well known edge detection techniques have been implemented for a set of 20 radiographs and number of pixels in each image has been calculated. Further, Gaussian filter has been applied over the images to smoothen the images so as to highlight the defect in the tooth. If the images data are available in the form of pixels for both hea...

Biodiesel Production from Waste cotton seed oil using low cost Catalyst: Engine performance and emission characteristics
Publication date: Available online 6 May 2016 Source:Perspectives in Science Author(s): Duple Sinha, S. Murugavelh Production of fatty acid methyl esters from waste cotton seed oil through transesterification was reported. The GC-MS analysis of WCCO oil was studied and the major fatty acids were found to be Palmitic acid (27.76%) and Linoleic acid (42.84%). The molecular weight of the oil was 881.039g/mol. A maximum yield of 92% biodiesel was reported when the reaction temperature, time, methanol/oil ratio and catalyst loading rate were 60°C, 50min, 12:1 and 3% (wt.%) respectively. The calcined Egg shell catalyst ...

A Comparison of Classification Techniques for Glacier Change Detection using Multispectral Images
Publication date: Available online 4 May 2016 Source:Perspectives in Science Author(s): Rahul Nijhawan, Pradeep Garg, Praveen Thakur Main aim of this paper is to compare the classification accuracies of glacier change detection by following classifiers: sub-pixel classification algorithm, indices based supervised classification and object based algorithm using Landsat imageries. It was observed that shadow effect was not removed in sub-pixel based classification which was removed by the indices method. Further the accuracy was improved by object based classification. Objective of the paper is to analyse different...

Solving channel allocation problem using new genetic operators - an experimental approach
Publication date: Available online 2 May 2016 Source:Perspectives in Science Author(s): Raja Marappan, Gopalakrishnan Sethumadhavan, U. Harimoorthy Channel allocation schemes are required in mobile networks to allocate bandwidth and channels to mobile stations. The main objective of channel allocation is to achieve maximum efficiency by means of channel reuse by avoiding adjacent and co-channel interferences among nearby cells or networks that share the bandwidth. Channel Allocation problem, an NP-hard problem, which means an exact solution cannot be found in polynomial time. Evolutionary and heuristic algorithms...

An Improved Method to Estimate the Fractal Dimension of Color Images
In this study, the improved differential box counting method is applied to the 24 bit representation of RGB color images to extract the roughness of color images. The validation of the proposal is performed by generating twelve different synthesized color images in terms of small variation of intensity value in RGB space and compared with previously three well defined existing methods that are weighted sum, average and desaturation method. The results showed that our proposed method is able to capture the accurate sharp variation of roughness as compared to the existing methods. (Source: Perspectives in Science)
