An angiotensin II receptor blocker-calcium channel blocker combination prevents cardiovascular events in elderly high-risk hypertensive patients with chronic kidney disease better than high-dose angiotensin II receptor blockade alone.
The OSCAR study was a multicenter, open-label RCT carried out in Japanese elderly hypertensive patients. Patients were randomized to angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) dose up-titration versus an ARB plus calcium channel blocker combination. Should mycophenolate mofetil replace cyclophosphamide as first-line therapy for severe lupus nephritis?
The side-effect profile of cyclophosphamide is well-known and most clinicians only prescribe it in the most severe disease. This review compares cyclophosphamide to mycophenolate mofetil for induction and maintenance therapy for severe lupus nephritis. Body Mass Index in 1.2 Million Adolescents and Risk for End-Stage Renal Disease
This population-based retrospective cohort study linked medical data from military service fitness examinations to the Israeli ESRD registry to determine if there is a link between BMI and development of ESRD. Over 1 million adolescents age 17 years underwent a fitness examinations from 1967-1997. This was linked to incident treated cases of ESRD from 1980 to 2010.
