Is the canal flare index a reliable means of estimation of canal shape? Measurement of proximal femoral geometry by use of 3D models of the femur
Conclusions Outside femoral shape was little different for any person; as a result, FFI was almost constant. In contrast, CFI was revealed to be affected by canal width at the isthmus only. With regard to the effect of rotation, P20/D20 was much less affected by rotation than CFI; it could, therefore, be an appropriate index for expressing proximal canal shape. Clinical outcome of low-grade central osteosarcoma and role of CDK4 and MDM2 immunohistochemistry as a diagnostic adjunct
Conclusions The diagnosis of LCOS is challenging; however, if it is properly diagnosed, there is a high chance of a cure with wide excision alone. Positive immunostaining for CDK4 or MDM2 may be used as a diagnostic adjunct, although negative immunostaining cannot rule out this tumor. The clinical, radiological, and typical pathological findings are vital in raising the suspicion of this rare tumor. (Source: Journal of Orthopaedic Science)

Computational psychological study of the Brief Scale for Psychiatric Problems in Orthopaedic Patients (BS-POP) for patients with chronic low back pain: verification of responsiveness
Discussion The present findings indicate that the BS-POP possesses sufficient responsiveness from a computational psychology perspective. The BS-POP constitutes a tool enabling orthopaedists to easily identify psychiatric problems in orthopaedic patients. (Source: Journal of Orthopaedic Science)

Diagnosis and treatment of Ewing sarcoma of the bone: a review article
Abstract Ewing sarcoma (ES) is rare in Japanese people, and only 30–40 patients develop the disease annually. To diagnose ES, molecular techniques that aim to detect characteristic fusion genes are commonly used in combination with conventional histological and immunohistochemical examinations. The treatment strategy for ES is characterized by multi-disciplinary collaboration between pediatric oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and orthopedic surgeons. In recent years, numerous large-scale national or international multi-institutional studies of ES have been performed. Pre- and pos...

Japanese orthopaedic association back pain evaluation questionnaire (JOABPEQ) as an outcome measure for patients with low back pain: reference values in healthy volunteers
Conclusion The reference values for JOABPEQ according to age and gender were established herein. Patients with low back pain should be evaluated with this new self-administered questionnaire taking these reference values into account. (Source: Journal of Orthopaedic Science)

The relationship between the lesion-to-ankle articular length ratio and clinical outcomes after bone marrow stimulation for small osteochondral lesions of the talus
Conclusion Arthroscopic bone marrow stimulation provides good clinical outcomes in small osteochondral lesions of the talus (<15 mm). For small lesions, the lesion size is not a prognostic factor. Level of evidence: IV Retrospective Case Series. (Source: Journal of Orthopaedic Science)

Epidemiology of appendicular skeletal fractures: a cross-sectional analysis of data from the Nottingham Fracture Liaison Service
Conclusion The incidence of appendicular skeletal fractures is high especially in the elderly female population with fractures of the upper limb more common. With an ageing population these numbers are projected to increase and therefore effective strategies to prevent falls and osteoporosis are clearly necessary. (Source: Journal of Orthopaedic Science)
