Effects of fondaparinux on pulmonary embolism following hemiarthroplasty for femoral neck fracture: a retrospective observational study using the Japanese Diagnosis Procedure Combination database
Conclusions Fondaparinux combined with mechanical prophylaxis is more effective in preventing postoperative PE following hemiarthroplasty for femoral neck fracture than mechanical prophylaxis alone. (Source: Journal of Orthopaedic Science)

Population-based study of the relationship between medial meniscus radial displacement, determined by use of ultrasound screening, and knee pain
Conclusion We found that WMRD was significantly associated with knee pain while walking or climbing stairs, which are weight-bearing activities. On the basis of the findings of this study, we believe US is a useful tool for evaluating the factors associated with knee pain in a population-based study. Level of evidence Level III. Calcitonin treatment is associated with less severe osteoarthritis and reduced toll-like receptor levels in a rat model
Conclusion Calcitonin treatment may lessen the severity of osteoarthritis in the rat model, perhaps by inhibition of Tlr expression in cartilage. (Source: Journal of Orthopaedic Science)

Accuracy of specimen-specific nonlinear finite element analysis for evaluation of distal radius strength in cadaver material
Conclusion In this study, a finite element model for evaluation of distal radius strength was validated and can be used to predict fracture risk. We conclude that a finite element model is useful for the evaluation of distal radius strength. Knowing distal radius strength might avoid distal radius fracture because appropriate antiosteoporotic treatment can be initiated. (Source: Journal of Orthopaedic Science)

An outcome measure of functionality and quality of life in Iranian women with osteoporotic vertebral fractures: a validation study of the QUALEFFO-41
Conclusions The findings show that the Iranian version of the QUALEFFO-41 is a reliable and valid measure of functionality and quality-of-life evaluation among patients with osteoporotic vertebral fractures. (Source: Journal of Orthopaedic Science)

Surgical outcomes of degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis with anterior vacuum disc: Can the intervertebral cage overcome intradiscal vacuum phenomenon and enhance posterolateral fusion?
Conclusions The vacuum sign at the spondylolisthesis segment should be regarded as another sign of instability. We suggest that instrumented posterolateral fusion simultaneous with intervertebral fusion with a cage can overcome this situation. (Source: Journal of Orthopaedic Science)

Reconstruction of intercalary bone defects following bone tumor resection with segmental bone transport using an Ilizarov circular external fixator
Conclusion From the long-term follow-up results, reconstruction with distraction osteogenesis seems to be an efficient method in patients with long life expectancies. However, a long external fixation time is a disadvantage of this technique. Problems in patient compliance and possible complications such as nonunion should be managed promptly. Bone substitute first or screws first? A biomechanical comparison of two operative techniques for tibial-head depression fractures
Conclusions A complete filling of the defect by first applying the calcium phosphate cement significantly reduces the secondary loss of reduction of the depression fracture fragment under cyclic loading with a clinically relevant partial weight bearing. The beneficial effects of drillable calcium phosphate cement may also be transferable to defects other than tibial-head depression fractures. (Source: Journal of Orthopaedic Science)

The risk factors of perioperative hemoglobin and hematocrit drop after intramedullary nailing treatment for intertrochanteric fracture patients
Conclusion The factors of age, medical disease such as diabetes, operation time, and time between the trauma and operation may be associated with the change of perioperative hemoglobin and hematocrit levels for intertrochanteric fracture patients after intramedullary nailing treatment in the early postoperative period. Correlations between patient satisfaction and ability to perform daily activities after total knee arthroplasty: why aren’t patients satisfied?
Conclusion Activities related to walking and standing are some of the most basic movements and basic demands for patients. In addition, “climbing up or down a flight of stairs,” “getting into and out of a car” and “squatting” are very important and distressing activities that significantly correlate with patient satisfaction after TKA. Prospective multicenter surveillance and risk factor analysis of deep surgical site infection after posterior thoracic and/or lumbar spinal surgery in adults
Conclusion Preoperative steroid therapy, spinal trauma, male gender and an operating time ≥3 h were independent risk factors for deep surgical site infection after thoracic and/or lumbar spinal surgery in adult patients. Identification of these risk factors can be used to develop protocols aimed at decreasing the risk of surgical site infection. (Source: Journal of Orthopaedic Science)

Patient satisfaction with double-door laminoplasty for cervical compression myelopathy
Conclusions In conclusion, 71 % of the patients who underwent double-door laminoplasty for cervical compression myelopathy were satisfied. The findings of this study, which examines the association between patient satisfaction and PROs, suggest that improvement in lower extremity function following surgical intervention affects patient satisfaction in those with cervical compression myelopathy. Soft tissue sarcoma misdiagnosed as benign peripheral neurogenic tumor
Conclusions If a tumor suggestive of a BPNT is painful, with a relatively short symptom duration, and presents with peritumoral edema without a definite target sign on MR images, the possibility of an STS must be considered. (Source: Journal of Orthopaedic Science)
