Household Water and Food Insecurity Are Positively Associated with Poor Mental and Physical Health among Adults Living with HIV in Western Kenya
ConclusionsAssessing both FI and WI is important for correctly estimating their relation with health outcomes. Interventions that address food- and water-related issues among persons living with HIV concurrently will likely be more effective at improving health than those addressing a single resource insecurity. This trial was registered atclinicaltrials.gov as NCT02815579. (Source: Journal of Nutrition)

Local Foods Can Increase Adequacy of Nutrients Other than Iron in Young Urban Egyptian Women: Results from Diet Modeling Analyses
ConclusionsA set of dietary advice based on locally consumed foods, if put into practice, can theoretically meet requirements for most nutrients, except for iron for which adequacy is harder to achieve without fortified products. The acceptability of the dietary changes modeled needs evaluation before promoting them to young Egyptian women. (Source: Journal of Nutrition)

Should the AIN-93 Rodent Diet Formulas be Revised?
The early 20th century saw the replacement of wild-caught rats with purpose-bred rat strains, beginning with the Wistar rat developed by Helen Dean King in 1906 (1), to serve as homogenous, standardized animal models for human physiology. Although most nutrient requirements were not yet known, and nutrient standards were not completed until the 1960s,  rodent diets were commonly grain-based and supplemented with a variety of products to produce adequate growth without signs of deficiency. But even in the 1940s,  purified diets were reported in scientific journals (2). These diets, however, were nutritionally inadequate...

Milk Fat Globule Membrane Supplementation During Suckling Ameliorates Maternal High Fat Diet –Induced Hepatic Steatosis in Adult Male Offspring of Mice
ConclusionsMFGM supplementation during suckling ameliorates maternal HFD-induced hepatic steatosis in mice via suppressing de novo lipogenesis, reinforcing antioxidant defenses and improving mitochondrial function. (Source: Journal of Nutrition)

( –)-Epicatechin and Anthocyanins Modulate GLP-1 Metabolism: Evidence from C57BL/6J Mice and GLUTag Cells
ConclusionsIn mice, EC and ACs regulated different steps in GLP-1 regulation, leading to increased plasma GLP-1. Cyanidin, delphinidin, PCA, and EC promoted GLP-1 secretion from GLUTag cells by activating the PKA-dependent pathway. These findings support the beneficial actions of these flavonoids in sustaining intestinal and glucose homeostasis through the modulation of the GLP-1 metabolism. (Source: Journal of Nutrition)

Hepatoprotective Effects of Indole, a Gut Microbial Metabolite, in Leptin-Deficient Obese Mice
ConclusionsOur results support the efficacy of indole to reduce hepatic damage and associated inflammatory response and macrophage activation inob/ob mice. These modifications appear to be attributable to direct effects of indole on the liver, rather than through effects on the adipose tissue or intestinal barrier. (Source: Journal of Nutrition)

Addition of Orange Pomace Attenuates the Acute Glycemic Response to Orange Juice in Healthy Adults
ConclusionData from both studies demonstrated no significant effect of OPF on postprandial iAUC compared with OJ. However, adding OP into OJ attenuates the postprandial glucose Cmax, and the responses were comparable to WOF in healthy adults. (Source: Journal of Nutrition)

Comparative Effects of Intragastric and Intraduodenal Administration of Quinine on the Plasma Glucose Response to a Mixed-Nutrient Drink in Healthy Men: Relations with Glucoregulatory Hormones and Gastric Emptying
ConclusionsIn healthy men, IG and ID quinine administration similarly lowered plasma glucose, increased plasma insulin and GLP-1, and slowed gastric emptying. These findings have potential implications for lowering blood glucose in type 2 diabetes.
