Decreased serum undercarboxylated osteocalcin is associated with cognitive impairment in male patients with type 2 diabetes
Basic and clinical researches have suggested that type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is associated with cognitive impairment, and diabetes mellitus increases the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia. Recently, some reports found that undercarboxylated osteocalcin (ucOC) could affect brain functions, and decreased in patients with T2DM. We aimed to investigate the association of serum ucOC with cognitive impairment in T2DM patients. (Source: Journal of Diabetes and Its Complications)

Review: The Relationship of Hemoglobin A1c to Postoperative Surgical Risk with an Emphasis on Joint Replacement Surgery
Patients with diabetes mellitus are known to have a high risk of postoperative complications, including infections, impaired wound healing, cardiovascular events, venous thromboembolism, and mortality. Because hyperglycemia has been thought to mediate this risk, there is a clinical propensity for improving glycemic control, as assessed by hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level, prior to proceeding with elective surgery, particularly joint replacement surgery. However, it is not established whether chronic poor glycemic control, indicated by elevated HbA1c levels, predicts increased risk of postoperative complications. (Source: Journ...

Higher serum albumin was related with diabetes incidence and the impact of BMI changes: based on cohort study of 18384 Chinese male elderly
Albumin (ALB) was a useful marker of nutrition and general health status. And there was evidence showed that ALB was associated with diabetes. However, the conclusion about the association was inconsistent, and little information was known about the elderly. (Source: Journal of Diabetes and Its Complications)

Differentially Methylated Circulating DNA: a Novel Biomarker to Monitor Beta Cell Death
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder of glucose homeostasis caused by insufficient secretion or inadequate action of insulin. Nowadays, the increased morbidity of DM is a worldwide issue. Pancreatic beta cell death plays a key role in the progress of DM, especially Type 1 diabetes (T1D). Traditional biomarkers, such as C-peptide and islet autoimmune antibodies are limited to reflect beta cell death and to identify high risk patients in the clinical practice. Recently, a novel biomarker, differentially methylated circulating DNA, has become a research hotspot. (Source: Journal of Diabetes and Its Complications)

Association of functional SNP-1562C > T in MMP9 promoter with proliferative diabetic retinopathy in north Indian type 2 diabetes mellitus patients
Retinal angiogenesis is a hallmark of diabetic retinopathy. Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs) are involved in degradation of extracellular matrix (ECM). Functional SNP-1562C>T in the promoter of the MMP-9 gene results increase in transcriptional activity. The present work was designed to evaluate the contribution of functional SNP-1562C>T of MMP-9 gene to the risk of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients in north Indian Population. Tissue expression of tubular injury markers is associated with renal function decline in diabetic nephropathy
The pathogenesis of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is complex and multifactorial; increasing evidence suggests that tubular injury and inflammatory process are involved in disease progression. We investigated the potential association of renal expression of tubular injury markers, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), and inflammatory markers, tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR) 1 and 2 with renal progression in pathologically proven diabetic nephropathy (DN).
