Severity-dependent and -independent brain regions of major depressive disorder: a long-term longitudinal near-infrared spectroscopy study
To establish neuroimaging biomarkers for major depressive disorder (MDD), investigations into longitudinal relationships with symptomatology are important. Previous studies using structural or functional MRI (fMRI) demonstrated the cross-sectional association between depression severity and neuroimaging indicators (Hall et  al., 2014; Zhang et al., 2016). However, no studies on neuroimaging in MDD have followed clinical outcomes and brain functions over a longer period of time (1-2 years). (Source: Journal of Affective Disorders)

Pretreatment brain connectivity during positive emotion upregulation predicts decreased anhedonia following Behavioral Activation Therapy for Depression
Behavioral Activation Therapy for Depression (BATD) is an intervention designed to ameliorate core symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD) by promoting systematic engagement in valued activities and reductions in avoidance behaviors. The overarching goal of BATD is to increase contact with potential sources of positive reinforcement (Dimidjian  et al., 2011). In line with the emerging science of neuroprediction to better match MDD patients to existing treatments (e.g., Langenecker et al., 2018; Pizzagalli et al., 2018), our recently completed open trial investigated neuroimaging predictors of BATD response (Walsh e...

Insomnia Predicts Increased Perceived Burdensomeness and Decreased Desire for Emotional Support Following an In-Laboratory Social Exclusion Paradigm
Insomnia is a common problem in the general population. Approximately one-third of individuals experience at least one insomnia symptom (i.e., difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early) at any given time (Morin et al., 2006). Not only may the experience of insomnia itself be inherently distressing (American Psychiatric Association[APA], 2013), but a growing body of research also indicates that insomnia is associated with a range of other negative physical and mental health consequences, including elevated risk for heart disease (Taylor et al., 2007), depression (Baglioni et al., 2011), and suicide...

Adhering to a vegetarian diet may create a greater risk of depressive symptoms in the elderly male Chinese population
China has become an aging society due to the decrease  in population growth rates and extended life expectancy. The Sixth National Census of China in 2010 showed that individuals 60 years and older accounted for 13.3% of the total population, and the proportion will reach one third by 2050 (Wang et al., 2017). While many age-related pathologies ar e presently in the spotlight, one of the most overlooked is elderly depression. (Source: Journal of Affective Disorders)

An Evaluation of Suicide Prevention Hotline Results in Taiwan: Caller Profiles and the Effect on Emotional Distress and Suicide Risk
Suicide continues to be recognized as a major health concern in Taiwan. The suicide rate has risen from 6.69 suicides per 100,000 people in 1992 to 16.00 in 2016 (Ministry of Health and Welfare, 2017a). Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people 15 to 24 years of age, the third among those 25 to 44 years of age, and the 12th in the general population (Ministry of Health and Welfare, 2017a). It is not only a leading cause of premature mortality, but it also impacts on other people and the community. (Source: Journal of Affective Disorders)

Persistent depressive disorder has long-term negative impacts on depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms at 10-year follow-up among patients with major depressive disorder
There are several types of chronic depression, including dysthymic disorder, major depressive disorder (MDD) superimposed on antecedent dysthymia (double depression), chronic major depression, and recurrent major depression with incomplete remission during episodes (Klein,  2010). In the DSM-V, persistent depressive disorder (PDD) includes these types of chronic depression (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Chronic depression has a negative impact on the prognosis of depression and increases the burden of depression, such as increased psychiatric comorbiditi es and suicide attempts (Hölzel et al., 2011; Klein a...

Diurnal variation in suicide timing by age and gender: evidence from Japan across 41 years
A large number of studies have accumulated evidence for the existence of cyclical changes in the frequency of suicide across time. Many scholars have examined seasonality in suicide, and have shown that its frequency typically increases in the spring and early summer months but that this pattern varies across regions, subpopulations, and methods (e.g. Ajdacic-Gross et al., 2010; Altamura et al., 1999; Chew and McCleary, 1995). The days of the week have also been shown to generate a cyclical change: suicide tends to be more frequent on Mondays or the first workday of the week, and conversely is less likely to occur on weeke...

Transcranial and Systemic Photobiomodulation for Major Depressive Disorder: A Systematic Review of Efficacy, Tolerability and Biological Mechanisms.
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a prevalent condition affecting 16.2% of the US population at some point in life (Kessler  et al., 2003). The disorder is also responsible for a significant burden, representing the second leading cause of years lived with disability (YLDs) in the world (Ferrari et al., 2013). Current standard treatments for MDD are medications and psychotherapy (Olfson et al., 2016). However, up t o one third of the patients do not achieve remission after several adequate antidepressant trials (Rush et al., 2009). (Source: Journal of Affective Disorders)

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Following the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake: A 10-year Systematic Review Among Highly Exposed Populations in China
Exposure to disaster has been shown to cause general distress as well as a range of psychological symptoms, including fear and anxiety, recurring disturbing intrusive memories, and depression. These symptoms can severely impair the affected individuals ’ psychosocial functioning and quality of life (McMillan et al., 2017). Although the consequences of disasters may include a wide range of psychopathologies (Norris et al., 2002), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an especially problematic disorder that is directly related to disaster-re lated traumatization (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013). Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder in Adult Bipolar Disorder Patients
Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has a worldwide prevalence ranging from 5.0% in school-age children in a world-wide sample to 15.5% in the US. (Polanczyk G et al., 2014, Rowland et al., 2015, Willcutt, 2012) Rates may be independent of economic development, as prevalence of ADHD was 3.4% in developing countries and 4.3% in the US, with minor national differences world-wide. (Fayyad et al., 2007, Kessler et al., 2006, Polanczyk et al., 2007, Simon et al., 2009) ADHD typically is recognized in childhood, with high levels of inattention, distractability, impulsivity, and variable hyperactivity and disruptive b...

Impulsive suicide attempts among young people- a prospective multicentre cohort study in Sweden
Self-harm and suicidal behaviour are common in young people; hence, prevention of fatal and non-fatal suicidal events is a target for mental health improvement strategies. When performing risk assessments, clinicians often focus on the presence of suicidal planning where the suicidal act is considered to be the end of a pathway, through a continuum of suicidal feelings (Paykel et  al., 1974, O'Connell et al., 2004). However, many suicidal acts have not been planned, and should be considered as impulsive acts (Rimkeviciene et al., 2015). (Source: Journal of Affective Disorders)
