EDTA-dependent pseudothrombocytopenia
In this study, two cases of EDTA-dependent PTCP are discussed to emphasize the importance of differentiating PTCP from true thrombocytopenia. The first case is of a 77-year-old woman with a femoral neck fracture, and the second case is of a 66-year-old woman with a frozen shoulder. Both cases showed low platelet counts in their routine blood tests and were ultimately proven to have PTCP. When identifying a patient with a low platelet count without any hematology disease, family history, and bleeding tendency manifestation, PTCP should also be considered. Re-examining blood samples with tubes containing other anticoagulants...

Invasive ductal carcinoma arising in borderline phyllodes tumor
Publication date: Available online 7 May 2015 Source:Formosan Journal of Surgery Author(s): Chih-Chiang Hung , Dah-Cherng Yeh , Chen-Hui Lee , Cheng-Chung Wu , Tse-Jia Liu Phyllodes tumors (PTs) are an infrequent breast tumor presentation. An invasive carcinoma arising in a borderline PT is extremely rare. A 58-year-old female presented with a mass over the left breast, which she had had for >1 year, with rapid growth in the past 3 months. The patient underwent wide excision under the assumption that the mass was a PT. Invasive ductal carcinoma and ductal carcinoma in situ arising in a borderline PT were in...

Ankle osteoarthritis: A rare complication after free fibular flap harvesting
We report a case of rapidly progressed ankle OA after fibular flap harvesting and the experience in managing it. A 46-year-old obese woman was diagnosed to have floor of mouth cancer, T4aN1M0. After wide excision of the tumor, a 6.5 cm segmental mandibular defect was reconstructed using a free fibular osteocutaneous flap. The flap was harvested from the right leg, preserving 6.5 cm of the distal fibular bone. The patient was discharged 2 months later and could walk without assistance. Eight months after the patient was discharged, she complained of severe pain in the right ankle, especially while ambulating. Plain radiog...

Diverticulitis presenting as right incarcerated inguinal hernia
This report presents an unusual condition of diverticulitis with an abscess resulting from a perforation but having the appearance of an incarcerated inguinal hernia. The clinical features demonstrated were not due to a strangulation of the contents in the hernia, but rather resulted from a tracking of the pus from the peritoneal cavity into the hernia sac. Being in poor general condition, the patient underwent a laparoscopic repair of the sigmoid perforation and drainage of the intra-abdominal abscess. The postoperative course was uneventful and the patient was discharged 14 days after the operation. Relevant literature i...
