Conservative treatment of idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis: A case report and literature review
We report on a 59-year-old man with periumbilical abdominal pain for 1 week. The pain was dull and persistent. A physical examination revealed a soft, tender abdomen with normoactive bowel sounds and mild rebounding tenderness in the right upper abdomen. The abdominal plain X-ray and abdominal computed-tomography findings were compatible with idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis. The symptoms resolved after only conservative treatment, and the disease did not recur during 5 years of follow-up. Idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis is a rare disease, and its pathogenesis is not yet clearly understood; however, it differs...

Therapeutic strategies for esophagogastric junction cancer
Publication date: Available online 25 December 2015 Source:Formosan Journal of Surgery Author(s): Pei-Ming Huang, Chiung-Nien Chen The incidence and prevalence of esophagogastric junction (EGJ) cancer have increased in Western and Asian countries in recent decades. However, previous studies on the classification, surgical treatment, and multimodal therapy in relation to these tumors have indicated multiple inconsistencies. Despite their single anatomical location and stage, studies on EGJ cancer-related therapy are scarce, because patient cases with EGJ cancer are typically examined in esophageal and gastric cancer...

Publication date: Available online 22 December 2015 Source:Formosan Journal of Surgery Author(s): Kuo-Hu Chen, Yin-Kuang Chang, Hsien-Ta Hsu, Kuo-Feng Huang Large parasagittal meningioma is rare in pregnant women. In this paper, we report the successful treatment of a pregnant woman with a large parasagittal meningioma. A 35-year-old woman in her 37th week of pregnancy presented with acute consciousness disturbances after experiencing headache and nausea for 2 weeks. We performed a successful cesarean delivery under general anesthesia, and immediately after the delivery, brain computed tomography was performed....

Coexistence of anterior communicating artery aneurysm and tuberculum sellae meningioma
Publication date: Available online 11 December 2015 Source:Formosan Journal of Surgery Author(s): Jen-Lung Chen, Jung-Shun Lee, Edgar D. Su, Ming-Tsung Chuang, Hsing-Hong Chen Tuberculum sellae meningioma is a common intracranial tumor. However, its coexistence with an intratumoral aneurysm is rare. Here, we present the case of a 65-year-old woman with progressive vision loss caused by a tuberculum sellae meningioma coexisting with an intratumoral anterior communicating artery aneurysm. Treatment modalities for patients with this rare coexisting pathology were reviewed. When an intracranial tumor is closely r...

Gallstone formation after gastrectomy for adenocarcinoma of the stomach
Conclusion The incidence of gallstone formation was 21.4%. Total gastrectomy, Billroth II reconstruction, age ≥ 60 years, and diabetes mellitus were risk factors for gallstone formation. Total gastrectomy is also a risk factor for complicated gallstone. (Source: Formosan Journal of Surgery)

Traumatic asphyxia combined with diffuse axonal injury
Publication date: October 2015 Source:Formosan Journal of Surgery, Volume 48, Issue 5 Author(s): Chi-Yi Lin, Yu-Kun Chen, Chun-Hsiung Huang Traumatic asphyxia, a rare, blunt chest trauma-related condition, indicates severe injury and is characterized by subconjunctival hemorrhage, facial edema, cyanosis, and petechiae. This condition mostly appears on the upper chest and face. Rapid oxygen administration with effective ventilation is essential in the treatment of traumatic asphyxia. Prognosis depends on rescue time and associated injuries. Most neurologic symptoms resolve within 24–48 hours and have relativel...

Increased activity of factor VIII causing acute intestinal ischemic disorder with recurrent and multiple arterial thromboses
We present the case of a 52-year-old man with hypercoagulability-induced acute arterial occlusive mesenteric ischemia. The patient suffered from arterial occlusive mesenteric ischemia, recent ischemic stroke, and previous renal infarction. He had no history of atrial fibrillation, atherosclerosis, vascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, malignancy, liver diseases, copper deficiency, or other risk factors for arterial thromboembolism. Segmental resection of the gangrenous bowel with primary end-to-end anastomosis was performed. A pathological examination revealed multiple thrombi within the mesenteric arteries of the infarc...

Advanced esthesioneuroblastoma with hyperostosis of the anterior skull base
We report the case of a 44-year-old man having a 3-year history of nasal obstruction and anosmia, acute worsening of vision in his right eye, and facial numbness on the right side. Brain computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an extensively enhanced soft tissue tumor involving bilateral nasal and orbital cavities, ethmoid sinuses, the floor of the anterior cranial fossa, and intradural invasion. In particular, prominent hyperostosis, a rare associated radiological finding, was observed on both sides of the orbital roofs. Bifrontobasal craniotomy involving a radical removal of the soft tissue mass, incl...

Publication date: Available online 21 October 2015 Source:Formosan Journal of Surgery Author(s): Tse-Lun Wang, Chih-Lung Lin, Shan-Yin Tsai, Ann-Shung Lieu Glioblastoma multiforme is the most common and aggressive primary malignant brain tumor and usually invades the intracranial space. Extracranial invasion is uncommon, and skin invasions are even less common. Here, we present an extremely rare case of aggressive skin invasion by glioblastoma multiforme. Once skin invasion occurs, its spread is too rapid to be resectable in only a few weeks and is often accompanied by deterioration of the primary lesion and sh...
