Influence of dialysis modalities on patients undergoing parathyroidectomy for renal hyperparathyroidism
Conclusion Patients on different dialysis modalities had similar decreases in intact PTH and alkaline phosphatase levels after surgery. However, the peritoneal dialysis patients had higher postoperative calcium–phosphorus product levels and more severe residual symptoms. (Source: Formosan Journal of Surgery)

Radical esophagectomy in elderly patients with esophageal cancer
Conclusion Esophagectomy in elderly patients with esophageal cancer can yield an acceptable outcome and fewer complications than esophagectomy in younger patients. Although reserved physiological functions are typically limited in elderly patients relative to younger patients, elderly patients with resectable esophageal cancer should not be denied esophagectomy. Clinical diagnosis and management of cystic meningioma with mural nodule is challenging
In this report, we share our experience regarding a case of cystic meningioma mimicking hemangioblastoma and discuss its management. An intraoperative frozen section is warranted to overcome the difficulty in disease diagnosis. (Source: Formosan Journal of Surgery)

Large coronary artery fistula
We present a case of congestive heart failure with pulmonary artery hypertension caused by a left-to-right shunt. Physical examination on admission revealed hypertension, arrhythmia, a diastolic murmur over the bilateral sternal borders, and a pitting edema over both lower legs. Imaging studies revealed a large coronary artery fistula (CAF). After ligation of the fistula, the patient recovered adequately and was discharged. Although cases of CAF have been reported and clinical presentations such as congestive heart failure are not rare, CAFs require particular attention, because they typically exhibit a varied clinical cou...

Large pseudocyst in the anterior extraperitoneal space as a complication of ventriculoperitoneal shunt: A case report
Publication date: Available online 25 August 2015 Source:Formosan Journal of Surgery Author(s): Chung-Hsin Lee, Wen-Yu Cheng, Chiung-Chyi Shen Ventriculoperitoneal shunts are used as a common treatment for hydrocephalus to divert cerebrospinal fluid into the peritoneal cavity. However, the shunt devices have a high incidence of malfunction mainly caused by catheter obstruction or infection and are associated with various complications, 10–30% of which are abdominal. These complications include: peritoneal pseudocysts; pseudotumor of the mesentery; inguinal hernia; volvulus; ascites; peritonitis; migration of th...

A rare case of traumatic asphyxia combined with diffuse axonal injury
Publication date: Available online 19 August 2015 Source:Formosan Journal of Surgery Author(s): Chi-Yi Lin, Yu-Kun Chen, Chun-Hsiung Huang Traumatic asphyxia, a rare, blunt chest trauma-related condition, indicates severe injury and is characterized by subconjunctival hemorrhage, facial edema, cyanosis, and petechiae. This condition mostly appears on the upper chest and face. Rapid oxygen administration with effective ventilation is essential in the treatment of traumatic asphyxia. Prognosis depends on rescue time and associated injuries. Most neurologic symptoms resolve within 24–48 hours and have relatively s...

Gastric teratoma in children: Our experience
Conclusion Gastric teratoma is almost always benign and has predilection for male sex. It commonly presents as a palpable abdominal mass. Complete surgical excision is curative. Unplanned resection of soft tissue sarcoma
Publication date: Available online 22 July 2015 Source:Formosan Journal of Surgery Author(s): Cheng-Fong Chen, Po-Kuei Wu, Wei-Ming Chen Unplanned surgery of a soft tissue sarcoma is defined as the gross removal of a tumor without appropriate preoperative imaging, biopsy, or attention to the wide surgical margin. Referrals after unplanned surgery account for between 14.7% and 53% of new patients in sarcoma centers. Treatment includes multiple modalities. It has been reported that 35–74% of residual sarcomas are found in reexcised specimens. Therefore, additional reexcision is typically warranted to remove the r...

Acute rupture of a peritoneal hydatid cyst
We describe the case of a 19-year-old woman who presented with an acute abdomen and allergic reactions after a fall. Ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed a hydatid cyst of the liver and ruptured pelvic hydatid cyst. First, the patient received appropriate measures to prevent anaphylactic shock and later underwent emergency surgery. Partial cystectomy of the ruptured pelvic hydatid cyst, peritoneal washing, and unroofing of the large unruptured hepatic hydatid cyst were conducted. Albendazole was administered postoperatively for 3 months. No recurrence was noticed during 3 years of follow-up. Although rarely doc...

Spontaneous biliary perforation in a 7-year-old child
We report a case of a 7-year-old boy with spontaneous biliary perforation, who presented with clinical features of acute peritonitis. Cholecystectomy with simple drainage by using a T-tube resulted in satisfactory recovery. We suggest that in a jaundiced child with symptoms of abdominal pain, distension, vomiting, acholic stools, and a previous anicteric period of good health, the diagnosis of spontaneous biliary perforation should be considered if there is a triad of: (1) signs of peritonitis; (2) absence of pneumoperitoneum on erect abdominal radiography; and (3) bilious abdominal paracentesis under ultrasonographic guid...

Single-port endoscope-assisted resection of forehead osteoma
Conclusion Removal of forehead osteoma from a single remote access with the aid of endoscopy is a safe and effective alternative. It can achieve the same esthetic and therapeutic results as the conventional two- or three-port approach without increasing the operative time or morbidities. (Source: Formosan Journal of Surgery)
