Autologous fat grafting for treating lipoatrophy secondary to lupus erythematosus panniculitis
Publication date: Available online 14 February 2016 Source:Formosan Journal of Surgery Author(s): Hsiao-Peng Huang, Yung-Chia Huang, Yuan-Sheng Tzeng, Chih-Hsin Wang, Tim-Mo Chen, Shyi-Gen Chen Lupus erythematosus panniculitis (LEP) is an uncommon variant of LE and accounts for only 1–3% of cutaneous LE cases. LEP lesions often heal with cutaneous scarring and lipoatrophy resulting in disfigurement. Studies regarding the treatment of permanent lipoatrophy and disfigurement caused by LEP are lacking in the literature. Here, we report our experience with a rare case of lipoatrophy caused by LEP that was tre...

A rare case of multiple small bowel intussusceptions and bowel obstruction caused by Rapunzel syndrome
We report a case of a 5-year-old girl with Rapunzel syndrome causing multiple small bowel intussusceptions. We were unable to identify the main cause of this condition during laparoscopic reduction. Definite diagnosis was made after the development of gastrointestinal tract obstruction. Surgeons should consider the possibility of Rapunzel syndrome when diagnosing the main cause of intussusceptions. (Source: Formosan Journal of Surgery)

Huge abdominal wall reconstruction with island pedicle anterolateral thigh flap with tensor fascia lata plus vastus lateralis muscle
We report a large abdominal wall reconstruction with island pedicle ALT flap with tensor fascia lata plus vastus lateralis muscle. An 80-year-old man with a large recurrent abdominal wall tumor had undergone two tumor resections after 2010. The pathology report demonstrated fibromatosis in 2010. Recently, computed tomography revealed a large, lobulated mass measuring approximately 11.8 cm × 5.3 cm × 8.8 cm, with heterogeneous enhancement, located at the left abdominal wall with cutaneous and subcutaneous involvement and adjacent omentum thickening. Wide excision and subsequent reconstruction of the abdominal wall ...

Experience of surgical treatment for hepatoblastoma
Conclusion A careful complete resection of HB combined with aggressive chemotherapy can yield long-term survival in most patients with HB. Liver transplantation should be performed in patients with unresectable tumors and tumor recurrence immediately after recurrence. Repeat hepatectomy is not recommended if a live donor is available. Carcinoma cuniculatum of the nasal tip
We describe a 74-year-old man who presented with carcinoma cuniculatum on the nasal tip arising from a keratoacanthoma-like lesion. To our knowledge, this is the first report of such a case in the literature. Literature related to carcinoma cuniculatum is also reviewed, and the challenges in diagnosis and choice of treatment are also described. In this case, the patient initially presented with keratoacanthoma on the nasal tip, and rapid recurrence with a verrucous mass occurred 1 month following tumor excision. Wide excision with 5-mm safe margins and full-thickness skin graft resurfacing were performed smoothly after re...

Evolving concepts in the management of orbital fractures with enophthalmos: A retrospective comparative analysis
Conclusion Orbital fractures with enophthalmos can be corrected at various time intervals with a comparable improvement rate. Surgical indications and surgery timing for orbital fractures with enophthalmos should be individualized on the basis of the severity of injury and type of orbital wall fracture. Abdominis rectus intramuscular myositis ossificans: A rare case report and literature review
Conclusion Clinical presentations along with cytological and radiological findings are helpful in diagnosing MO. Considering MO in the differential diagnosis is necessary for avoiding diagnostic pitfalls and unnecessary investigations, which can have major consequences and complications for patients. Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation on a phalanx with periosteal erosion
Publication date: Available online 15 January 2016 Source:Formosan Journal of Surgery Author(s): Chi-Yu Wang, Yu-Jen Shih, Chang-Yi Chou, Chih-Hsin Wang, Chun-Kai Chang, Tim-Mo Chen, Shyi-Gen Chen, Zheng-Yi Huang Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation (BPOP) is an uncommon benign hand tumor with a high rate of local recurrence, marked proliferative activity, and an atypical histological appearance. The aim of this paper is to present a rare and illustrative example of BPOP with periosteal erosion. A 64-year-old male presented with a 10-year history of a mass, measuring approximately 3 cm in...

Extensor-pollicis-longus or -brevis tendons rupture after corticosteroid injection
We present two cases and review possible rupture mechanisms. In case 1, the patient presented with a painful swelling on the dorsal side of her right first metacarpophalangeal joint. An orthopedic surgeon prescribed three local corticosteroid injections over 4 weeks, and the patient experienced a sudden loss of extension on the distal phalanx of her thumb 3 weeks after the last injection. Two days later, the proximal phalanx of the thumb lost its extension. Surgical exploration revealed that the extensor-pollicis-longus and extensor-pollicis-brevis tendons were completely severed. Both tendon ends had edematous necrosis ...

Delayed contralateral epidural hematoma after decompressive craniectomy for a traumatic acute subdural hematoma
Publication date: December 2015 Source:Formosan Journal of Surgery, Volume 48, Issue 6 Author(s): Chen-Hsing Su, Jung-Tung Liu, Cheng-Siu Chang, Wen-Jui Liao, Cho-Shun Li After falling from a height, a 29-year-old male patient developed a traumatic left subdural hematoma (SDH) with brain swelling and a midline shift to the right side, as well as a small epidural hematoma (EDH) (thickness: <1 cm) overlying a contralateral temporal linear fracture. A decompressive craniectomy for SDH evacuation and the placement of an intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring device were performed. Because of uncontrollabl...

In this paper, we report the successful treatment of a pregnant woman with a large parasagittal meningioma. A 35-year-old woman in her 37th week of pregnancy presented with acute consciousness disturbances after experiencing headache and nausea for 2 weeks. Conservative treatment of idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis
We report on a 59-year-old man with periumbilical abdominal pain for 1 week. The pain was dull and persistent. A physical examination revealed a soft, tender abdomen with normoactive bowel sounds and mild rebounding tenderness in the right upper abdomen. The abdominal plain X-ray and abdominal computed-tomography findings were compatible with idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis. The symptoms resolved after only conservative treatment, and the disease did not recur during 5 years of follow-up. Idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis is a rare disease, and its pathogenesis is not yet clearly understood; however, it differs...

Breast reconstruction modality and outcomes after mastectomy
Conclusions In this small-scale study, we found that an implant-based reconstruction was more frequently performed on older patients. Because of the relatively small average body size and low BMIs of Asian people, obesity is not considered to affect the postoperative complication rate. In addition, postreconstructive irradiation is unlikely to produce additional complications because the patients underwent pedicle flap reconstruction. (Source: Formosan Journal of Surgery)
