Pattern of vitamin D in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and in patients with bronchial asthma
Conclusion Vitamin D deficiency was highly prevalent in COPD and bronchial asthma (100% and 50%) respectively. Low levels of vitamin D were associated with low FEV1%, frequent exacerbations in patients with COPD and bronchial asthma, and increased COPD severity as assessed by GOLD guidelines. Important statistically significant negative associations between vitamin D level and both asthma control and asthma severity according to GINA classification were also found. Thus it is advised to include vitamin D levels in the routine assessment of patients with bronchial asthma and COPD, as well as studying the importance and clin...

Serum interleukin-6 in systemic sclerosis and its correlation with disease parameters and cardiopulmonary involvement
Conclusion IL-6 level increased in patients with SSc and significantly correlated with EUSTAR score, indices of SAQ, DLCO, 6MWD, HRCT scores, and echocardiographic abnormalities of the right side of the heart. These results support the role of IL-6 in the disease activity and in the development of cardiopulmonary manifestations in SSc patients. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis)

Plasma vitamins and essential trace elements in multi-drug resistant tuberculosis patients before and during chemotherapy
This study determined the plasma level of micronutrients (Fe, Zn, Cu, vitamins A, C, D and E) in MDR-TB patients before and throughout anti-TB chemotherapy. Plasma iron, zinc, copper, vitamins A, C, D and E were determined in twenty-four (24) MDR-TB patients before the commencement of anti-TB chemotherapy, 2months, 4months and 6months post-commencement of anti-TB chemotherapy, as well as in twenty (20) healthy controls. Plasma vitamin A level was significantly decreased before chemotherapy compared with controls. At 2months of anti-TB treatment there were significant decreases in plasma levels of iron, vitamins A, C and E ...

Predictive value of rapid shallow breathing index in relation to the weaning outcome in ICU patients
Conclusion RSBIsp measured through spirometry at the end of SBT is a better predictor of weaning outcome than RSBIpsv measured through pressure support. Our result also reveal that dead space fraction (Vd/Vt) together with PACO2–PECO2 difference are good adjunctive tools for predicting weaning outcome in type II respiratory failure.
